• H. B. Pratt arrived in Caribou Thursday of last week from a six weeks’ business trip to New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
100 Years Ago-Jan. 15, 1914
• Cross-border prohibition — The provisional government of St. John, New Brunswick, at its meeting this week was asked by local ministers and those from Fort Fairfield to cancel the licenses of three saloons. It is said the saloons were in the forest, and that the sole purpose was to cater to the people of the town of Fort Fairfield, which has about 4,000 inhabitants and is just across the border in Maine, where they are supposed to have prohibition.
• Winter weather in the news — So far 1914 has given us a taste of a genuine old fashioned Aroostook winter with plenty of snow and cold, which usually means a dry and warm summer. Owing to the severe storm of last Sunday there were no services in any of the churches in New Sweden. Nearly every train has been more or less late this week, owing to the extreme cold and difficulty to keep up steam, and the drifting snow.
75 Years Ago-Jan. 19, 1939
• Dial telephone for Washburn — Telephone users in Washburn are to have all the advantages of the telephone company, Manager A. G. Vose announced last week. The New England Telephone & Telegraph Co. plans to replace the present manual equipment, which requires the use of a hand crank to call the operator, with dial equipment similar to that now used throughout New England.
• Flying club formed — Announcement was made recently by pilot Ernest Pretsch of the move by a number of local flying enthusiasts to form a flying club. The club is to be known as the Aroostook Flying Club and will have its headquarters at the Caribou Municipal Airport.
50 Years Ago-Jan. 16 1964
• What’s on TV? — The following three programs were featured in television listing section of this week’s newspaper: “Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color” broadcast on Sunday evenings at 7:30 p.m.; “The Jack Paar Program, broadcast Friday nights at 10 p.m.; and “Mr. Novak” featuring actor James Franciscus shown every Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., all on Channel 2, WLBZ, Bangor.
• New ski slope opens in Caribou — The newly completed T Bar ski slope on Prestile Hill, operated by the Northmen Ski Club of Caribou, will be in operation this coming weekend. The hours for skiing will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Plans for night skiing are being discussed and hours will be announced at a later date.
25 Years Ago-Jan. 18, 1989
• Good reading for Sesquicentennial — The Friends of the Aroostook County Historical Center, the Haystack Historical Society and Acadia Publishing Co. of Bar Harbor will host a reception to mark the release of Dr. Philip B. Turner’s book, “Rooster.” The book chronicles Aroostook County beginning in 1604 and continuing for 365 years with humor, joy and sadness — making good reading for this Aroostook Sesquicentennial year.
• Super Bowl specials — Local grocers are advertising the following Super Bowl specials this week: Ruffles potato chips, 89 cents; lipton onion dip, 79 cents; bananas, 29 cents per lb.; 10-oz. pkg. of Chef Boy-ar-dee pizza, 99 cents and a 12-pack of Miller Light Beer, $5.97.
