The Houlton girls (4-3) split a pair of games last week, as they overtook Washington Academy and fell to Presque Isle.
In East Machias on Saturday, first half action was close with Houlton leading 13-10 and 23-17. However in the second half, Houlton broke the game open for the win, outscoring the Raiders, 21-11. Katie Condon dropped in a game-high 16 points to lead the Lady Shires, while Bre Longstaff chipped in with 11 points.
For Washington Academy, Logan Huckins had 10 points and Lauren Raye added eight.
Last Tuesday, the Lady Shires let a point-worthy game against visiting Presque Isle slip through their fingers, 43-37.
Presque Isle led at the quarter breaks 10-9; 22-17; and 37-29, but turnovers and missed free throws by Houlton helped the Wildcats hang on.
Hannah Graham led Presque Isle with 18 points.
For Houlton, Jessie Dickison and Condon each had eight points and they both controlled the glass as Dickison grabbed 14 rebounds and Condon brought down 10. Natalie Hill and Longstaff each had six points, while Sam Keegan added five.
Katahdin 41, GHCA 39 — It was an exciting game on Saturday in Hodgdon, as the game came down to free throws.
Katahdin’s Courtney Stevens made two free throws with seven seconds left to lift her team to the win. GHCA had a last-second shot to tie the game that missed.
Morgan Livezey led Katahdin (4-4) with 13 points and Stevens added nine.
For GHCA, 6-3, Kristen Brewer, an eighth-grader, scored 13 points and freshman Rylee Warman had 12 more.
The game started out tied at 10-all before GHCA took a slim 20-18 halftime edge. After three, the Lady Cougars had turned the tide for a 31-29 advantage leading into an exciting final period.
East Grand 29, GHCA 56 — Last Thursday in Hodgdon, the Lady Eagles built a 25-11 halftime lead and never looked back.
Colby Walker turned in 17 points, while Warman posted 15 and Makayla Watson added 10 for the winners.
For East Grand, Allie McEwen scored 10 points.
GHCA 56, Ashland 38 — Last Monday at the University of Maine Presque Isle, the GHCA girls broke open a close game with a 19-8 third-quarter scoring run to post the win.
GHCA led from the onset of the game 13-7; 20-19; and 39-27.
Walker led the Lady Eagles with a game-high 25 points, while Warman netted 15 and Watson tossed in 14.
For Ashland, Caitlyn Paradis scored 15 points and Marissa Chasse chipped in with 12.
Katahdin 38, PVHS 58 — The Lady Cougars were set back last Thursday in Howland, as the Penobscot Valley girls extended their 18-11 opening lead to a 35-13 halftime cushion. After three, the Howlers led 48-25.
Sami Ireland keyed PVHS’ offense with 24 points, while Molly McGinn tallied 17 and Amy Hallett had 15 points, nine assists, six rebounds and six steals.
For Katahdin, Livezey scored 12 points.
East Grand 40, Limestone/MSSM 48 — In Danforth on Saturday, Limstone/MSSM led at all quarter breaks 10-6; 24-11; and 39-23.
Melissa Cantafio scored 13 points and Alexis Bell added 12 points for the Eagles.
Chelsea Winiarki paced East Grand with 17 points and 15 rebounds, while McEwen recorded a double-double, 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Limestone/MSSM 54, East Grand 28 — In the teams’ first meeting last Monday in Limestone, the Lady Eagles took a 14-2 opening lead and extended it to 25-9 at halftime en route to the win.
Bell keyed a well-balanced Lady Eagles squad with 10 points, while Jordyn Hopkins netted nine points and Ellyzabeth Bencivenga and Kelsee Albert each added eight. Chelsey Pelkey collected 10 steals.
Sarah Stoddard paced East Grand with a game-high 14 points.
