HOULTON — Some artists go their whole lives without getting a piece of work published in a national magazine.

Grace Kafferlin of Houlton is not one of those people. At just the tender age of 8, Kafferlin had her first work of art published in the January 2014 issue of “Spider,” a national children’s magazine.

NE-CLR-Spider-dc1-pt-2PUBLISHED — Grace Kafferlin, 8, of Houlton had a piece of art published in the January 2014 issue of “Spider,” a national children’s magazine. She is the daughter of Kurt and Erin Kafferlin. The photo below shows the picture Kafferlin created. The artwork shows “Spider” and his catepillar friend “Sam,” along with Grace depicted as a fairy with wings.

The daughter of Kurt and Erin Kafferlin, Grace said she couldn’t remember how long it took her to draw the colorful picture, which featured “Spider and Sam” celebrating a birthday. Grace is also featured in the picture with fairy wings. She submitted the piece back in September.
“I do really like the magazine, but as I have gotten older I have gone to the next magazine up, but I still really like it,” she said. “My younger brother is getting into Spider now.”
Spider magazine features short stories, poems, articles, multicultural features and activities by children’s authors and illustrators. In each issue readers are invited to submit their original artwork or writing on a specific theme to “Spider’s Corner,” with hundreds of entries pouring in each time from enthusiastic readers all over the world.
