In the kickoff to the 2013-14 Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department grades 3-4 co-ed basketball season, the Oregon Ducks hit the hardwood against the Florida Gators. First to break the ice in scoring was Oregon’s Ryllan Thibault off of a steal. Jacob Watt brought his Gators back to level ground with a hoop of his own before teammate Logan Akeley knocked down a nice jumper to go up two points at the end of the first quarter.
In the second and third periods, Oregon’s Faith Sjoberg scored four points and Thibault added a basket to give their team a two-possession lead. In the fourth quarter, Sjoberg netted another basket to add to Oregon’s lead. Florida’s Josh Nadeau tried to make a run by scoring a quick hoop, but Oregon held on, 10-6.
Day Two featured a slate of exciting games. Indiana took on Michigan in what proved to be a see-saw battle, with both teams exchanging baskets until Michigan’s Dawson Beaulieu made the game-winning steal and layup with 55 seconds left for a 12-11 victory.
Posting points for Indiana was David Rayner, who led the way with six points. Cavin Cleaves added three and Breygan Mahan chipped in a hoop. Michigan’s attack was led by Beaulieu with eight and Asher Tuttle with four.
The second game of the day featured Georgetown and Duke. Georgetown broke the ice with Noah Yarema scoring a nice low-post basket. The game was hard fought but Duke’s Xavier McAtee was just too much in scoring a league-high 14 points in his team’s 20-12 triumph. Also scoring for Duke were Jordan Higgins with four points and Mia Casavant with a basket off a crucial out-of-bounds play.
On the other side of the court, Malachi Cummings led the way with six points with Noah Yarema netting two baskets and Ben Beaulieu a layup.
In the night cap, North Carolina took on red-hot Oregon. For North Carolina, Rossalyn Buck made a basket and Kaden Tardif contributed a pair of foul shots.
Later in the week, Indiana took on Florida and the Hoosiers’ offensive attack was well balanced with four players tallying points. Rayner led the way with seven, followed by Devin Osse and Mahan adding two hoops each and Cleaves netting a layup. On the other side of the floor, foul shots proved to be Florida’s downfall as the team misfired on eight of 12 from the charity stripe. Nadeau recorded a game-high 12 points for Florida, but Indiana earned the 17-12 win.
In the second game, Georgetown and Michigan met for a showdown. Georgetown’s Cummings led the way by scoring in every quarter and recording 14 points in an 18-6 win. Noah Yarema chipped in a pair of baskets as well. For Michigan, Braydon Jackson, Caleb Nash and Asher Tuttle all made hoops.
