Easton boys unbeaten through five,
35-game win streak for Beavers snapped
The Wildcat girls have picked up where they left off from last year’s state championship season, opening with four consecutive victories.
With only four players back from a season ago, PI has been up to the challenge so far. The latest victories came last week as the ’Cats beat County rivals Houlton and Fort Kent and then took care of business on the road at Old Town Saturday.
In the 57-30 verdict over the Coyotes, Krystal Kingsbury and Hannah Graham, the top veteran returnees, led the offense with 16 and 14 points, respectively.
The two combined for 45 points in the victory at Fort Kent two days earlier. Kingsbury had 24 and Graham 21.
The PI boys, on the other hand, are still looking for their first victory and hope to accomplish that soon with a pair of upcoming home games.
The Wildcats, now 0-3, were bested at Houlton last Wednesday, 69-54, as Shire junior Kyle Bouchard tossed in 33.
Karson Eaton had 24, include six three-pointers, in the defeat. Brad Shields netted 15.
On Saturday, the Wildcats fell at Old Town, 68-46. Eaton again was tops for PI in scoring with 15 points.
In Class D play, the Easton Bears have reeled off five wins in a row to begin the campaign.
Easton took care of Madawaska, Ashland and Fort Fairfield in action last week.
The Bears’ Hunter Turner dominated in the latest victory on Monday at home over the Tigers. The senior forward had 28 points and 18 rebounds in the 46-36 win.
Robbie Watson scored 10 points for 2-2 Fort Fairfield, which had also lost to Hodgdon Thursday, 59-47, despite Watson’s 15-point performance.
Freshman Jake Flewelling poured in 21 Friday in his team’s 71-40 triumph over Ashland. Mark Chasse had 12 to lead the Hornets.
Flewelling also led the way with 17 against the Owls.
The Bears next play at Washburn Monday in what could be their toughest test of the season.
The Beavers were without two key players in Jarrett Olson and Cameron Preston in last Tuesday’s lopsided 70-43 loss at Hodgdon, but the team bounced back with victories over Van Buren and Madawaska.
Olson returned and scored 22, while Cameron Bragg and Noah Caron added 20 and 17, respectively, in Friday’s 83-63 win at Van Buren.
On Monday, Kenny Irving was the offensive leader with 17 as the Beavers bested Madawaska, 59-43.
Central Aroostook welcomed back junior guard Chandler Brewer, who missed the team’s opening-season loss to Southern Aroostook, and won a couple games in the process.
The Panthers downed Limestone-MSSM Friday, 63-29, led by Brewer’s 17 points. On Monday, CA stopped Fort Kent, 58-54, behind a balanced attack as Brewer, Dane Kingsbury and Zack McClung all had 10 points.
In girls’ play, Washburn saw its 35-game winning streak snapped Friday in a 66-63 loss at Van Buren.
The Beavers trailed by 12 points at halftime and made a late comeback that fell short. The team’s last loss came on Jan. 13, 2012, also at Van Buren.
Carmen Bragg, Washburn’s senior guard, hit a three-pointer in the fourth quarter to allow her to reach the 1,000-point mark for her career. She led the offense with 25 points.
Parise Rossignol, the University of Maine-bound senior guard for the Crusaders, tallied 38 points and also had 10 rebounds and eight assists to lead the winners.
Washburn bookended that loss with victories over Southern Aroostook last Wednesday and Madawaska Monday.
On Friday in Dyer Brook, Fort Fairfield outscored Southern Aroostook, 27-12, over the second and third quarters, but had to hold off a late charge in a 44-42 triumph.
The Tigers moved to 2-1 on the season behind Whitney McNamee’s 15 points and 14 rebounds.
The Easton girls have a three-game winning streak as coach Bob Doar’s team beat Wisdom, Madawaska and Ashland in recent play.
Entering play Tuesday, both Ashland and Central Aroostook were still looking for their first victories.
