MADAWASKA, Maine — A freestyle meet kicked off the Aroostook County high school ski season last Wednesday, and the Viking girls proved victorious by scoring a meet-low 26 points to beat out five competing schools.
Hannah Streinz of Katahdin won the race in 12 minutes and 13 seconds, but Sarah Doak of the Vikings was the runner-up in 13:41.
Lauren Chapman (sixth, 15:54), Eileen Patton (ninth, 17:22) and Emma Belyea (10th, 17:29) were the other scorers for the winning Caribou team. Fort Fairfield’s Sarah Beaulieu turned in a solid performance by placing third in the event in 14:15. Her Tiger team came in fourth place with 77 points, behind only Fort Kent (34) and Madawaska (66).
Presque Isle was fifth with 82 points and Katahdin, with Streinz the only competitor, scored 91 for sixth place.
The Caribou boys tallied 51 points to place third out of six teams. The host Owls won with 21 points and Fort Kent was second with 31.
Presque Isle (58), Fort Fairfield (91) and Katahdin (109) were other schools competing. Leading Caribou were Riley McDuffie (12:40) and Keith Draper (13:04), who were sixth and eighth, respectively. Daniel Streinz of Katahdin won in 9:58. Thomas Krause of FF was 20th in 14:34.
