Easton food pantry challenge a success

EASTON NEWS

by Hillary Hallett

During the month of November the churches in Easton challenged each other to “Fill The Food Pantry.” They collected a total of 2,678 food items! Special thanks goes out to Easton United Baptist, Pine Tree Baptist, New Song and Easton Wesleyan.

On the last Sunday of November over 30 volunteers from the churches gathered to sort the food and place it on the pantry shelves. In addition, the churches and Easton Kiwanis provided Thanksgiving baskets to 30 families.
The pantry would like to also say thank you to the Easton Cub Scouts for the numerous bags of groceries they collected for the pantry. The shelves were almost bare a couple weeks ago and they are well stocked once again. Thanks goes to everyone who volunteered and who donated food. It is a blessing.

Hunter lives up to his name

Hunter Dudley enjoyed a fall hunt most young men can only dream of; he was able to get both a bear and moose. It was a great chat with Hunter as he explained the moose coming out behind him and the bear in the corn field and the difficulties they (he and his dad, Alan Dudley) encountered with the shooting sticks. He got both animals with a Mauser 6.5 caliber. Congratulations, Hunter, and nice shooting!

EPCO alert

The EPCO (Easton Parent Community Organization) will hold a Christmas Bazaar on Thursday, Dec. 12, for Easton Elementary students to purchase gift items for family members at the bargain price of $1 each. Send a child’s money and gift list to school the week of Dec. 2 and it will be kept in a safe place until the day of the sale. The group is still in need of bags (any occasion) and tissue paper for wrapping.  They will also require a lot of adult help to make this event run smoothly. If you would be willing to help us the day of the event, call 488-7701 or email epco@eastonschools.org.

Rec upcoming activities

Christmas Gift Making — For the last several years the children have been making gifts for the special people in their lives (parents, teacher, siblings, grandparents, etc.) and bringing them home wrapped up and ready to go under the tree. This year we will be running this program again. Children must be signed up in advance and will be assigned a date to attend. Please note children only come to one of the three dates; at that time they will make all their gift(s).
This program is limited to the first 36 participants. There is no fee, but parents will be asked to help with supplies. To register you must call or e-mail Hillary at your first convenience. Your child will be assigned one of the following dates: Dec. 18, 19 or 20. This program will take place at the hall until 4:30 p.m. (please notice the change in time from regular programs)! Don’t forget to call or e-mail Hillary to sign your child up no later than Dec. 6.
Basketball practice — The third- and fourth-grade basketball team will be starting practices early this year in order to participate in basketball games over Christmas recess. The athletes will practice on Friday, Dec. 13 and Tuesday, Dec. 17 at the elementary school gym until 4 p.m. (This is a somewhat sporadic schedule due to working around the junior high teams games and practices).
Friday, Dec. 27, the team will play against Mars Hill at home. Games will be played at 9:30 and 10:15 a.m. Please be at school by 9:15 a.m. On Tuesday, Dec. 30, we’ll play in Ashland at 10 a.m.; departing from the Hall at 9 a.m. (carpooling, if possible). Practices will continue into January and run through (approximately) February break.
