HOULTON, Maine — An explosion to an asphalt tank at Steelstone Industries plant was quickly extinguished Tuesday morning.
According to Assistant Chief Jim Brown of the Houlton Fire Department, firefighters responded to a report of an asphalt fire at Steelstone Industries, located on Steelstone Street. When firefighters arrived, they discovered a 10,000-gallon asphalt tank located outside had burst.
Firefighters used about 70 gallons of chemical foam to extinguish the fire. The cause of the explosion was not determined, Brown said. The Department of Environmental Protection was notified and assessed the scene to make sure there was no threat to groundwater contamination.
No one was injured.
