CARIBOU, Maine — After a successful November Food Drive, Builders Club members of the Caribou Middle School donated about 525 collected nonperishable food items to the Caribou Ecumenical Food Pantry on Nov. 22 — they even loaded the goods into the Ecumenical Food Panty director’s truck. It’s not the first good deed Builders Club members have done this year, and it certainly won’t be the last as the students are actively looking for different ways to help out around town.
“We would like to know of ways we can be of service to our community,” said adviser of the CMS Builders Club Lori Knight. “If there is a community project or organization where volunteer help is needed, please keep the Builders Club in mind — we may be able to help.”
There are currently over 25 members of the Builders Club at CMS, and Knight explained that the club is a facet of the Key Club International program of Kiwanis International. Knight also described how the Builders Club gives middle school students a chance to learn important skills and become more involved with their school and community.
“As a Builders Club member, they perform service, build character and learn to be a leader,” Knight added, explaining that the core values of the Builders Club are character building, leadership, inclusiveness and caring.
Community service projects undertaken by the club include Trick or Treat for UNICEF, a fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, and the successful November Food Drive.
To help the group with their fund-raising efforts, members sell concessions during CMS basketball games.
“We have a growing membership, and interest seems to be building,” Knight said.
