LIMESTONE, Maine — The Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge will be bustling with activity this weekend as its Friends group hosts a two-day event as part of their Second Saturday series. Friends group members had to cancel their annual celebratory events held in conjunction with National Wildlife Refuge week — an approximately five-year tradition that draws nearly 50 people every year — this year, when the refuge was closed last month due to the federal government shutdown.
Though they couldn’t hold the annual event last month, they moved it to this weekend and are extending the festivities in honor of Veterans’ Day.
The annual Open House will feature an opportunity for folks to take auto tours through the weapons storage area, down a paved road usually prohibited for vehicles.
“Because it’s the weekend of Veterans’ Day, we’re going to hold (the Open House) on Saturday and Sunday,” Reinhart said.
Friends members will have maps on hand for self-guided tours, but they’re also hoping to have former Loring Air Force Base personnel available for guided tours of the facilities, which used to house the nuclear weapons components.
There will also be a great bat project offered over the weekend, as well as games for the kids and a build-your-own first-aid kit opportunity.
“All the supplies will be there and you can build your own first-aid kit,” Reinhart said.
The event will take place rain, snow, or shine on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. and on Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
