EASTON NEWS

by Hillary Hallett

On Saturday, Oct. 19, friends, supporters and staff of the Francis Malcolm Science Center gathered to celebrate the facility’s 30th birthday, recalling the opening of the Science Center in October 1983.    Following the reception, guests were treated to a special presentation, “All systems Go,” a one-hour planetarium presentation devoted to highlighting the heroic parade of great achievements of the American and Russian space effort between 1957-75. It was a visionary program that helped to restore a place in space and help with growth for new space pioneers.
There was a plaque presentation to acknowledge the generous financial contributions from Presque Isle and Fort Fairfield Rotarians, Presque Isle and Easton Kiwanians, and the MSSM Key Club — funding that allowed the center to replace the 30-year-old sound and lighting system in the planetarium. The group also recognized the many  hours Dr. Greg and Louise Hamlin spent installing the equipment.
The entire building, with many new renovations, was open with games, displays and activities.
According to Larry Berz, the planetarium director, “It was a great event of our purpose and our mission.”  Approximately 80 people attended and refreshments were provided.

Annual Trunk-or-Treat

The Easton Wesleyan Church will be hosting their annual Trunk-or-Treat program on Thursday, Oct. 31, at the church. The program runs from 6-7:30 p.m. Children up to grade 6 can play the carnival games, put their friends in the jailhouse, have snacks, watch a blacklight puppet show, win prizes including a portable DVD player, and collect candy from the trunks of cars in the parking lot. Games are provided upstairs for young children. If you wish to use your vehicle to pass out candy or would like to volunteer to run a game, call Pastor Vaughn at 227-3589 or e-mail at vaughnmartin@myfairpoint.net.

Harvest Party 2013

The annual EPCO Harvest Party will be held Saturday, Nov. 2, from 2-4 p.m. at the Easton Elementary School. Admission to the event will be Thanksgiving items to benefit the Easton branch of the Friends Helping friends Food Pantry. Ideas include stuffing, cranberry sauce, canned pumpkin and fruit, pudding, etc. Please, no glass jars! EPCO is asking for small toys (Happy Meal-size) to use as game prizes. If you have new or gently-used toys to donate, please send them to school with your child to leave them in the front office.
There will be a cake walk; if you would like to donate a cake, call the elementary school at 488-7700. They would like to suggest 8-inch cakes (two to a box mix) or cupcakes. Smaller cakes mean more winners!
Volunteers for setup on Friday, Nov. 1, would be greatly appreciated from approximately 5-7 p.m. Costumes, games and food equal fun!

Cemetery flower removal

Please remove all ornaments, flowers and plants from the Easton cemeteries by Oct. 31. If not removed by that time, they will be picked up by the town. If you have questions, call the Town Office at 488-6652.

Election Day

The polls will be open on Tuesday, Nov. 5, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Easton Town Office. There will five bond issue questions on the ballot.

Sesquicentennial Committee needs you

The Easton Sesquicentennial Planning Committee needs your help. The committee would love to have stories, photographs and history of the town for a publication they are in the process of compiling. All materials can be turned in to the Town Office starting immediately. The committee is also looking for activities suggestions and volunteers. If you are interested in being involved  e-mail info@eastonme.com.

Rec upcoming programs

Sneakin in Science — We are excited to have Sarah McQuarie’s wonderful science program back in Easton and they have some wonderful new activities planned for us. We must have at least six participants sign up to make this class happen and a maximum of 12. Classes will run three Wednesdays in November on the 6th, 13th and 20th. Cost is $30 and it must be received by Nov. 13 (the second class). Please sign up by e-mailing or calling the Rec Department. Payments can be sent to school in an envelope or be dropped off at the Town Office.
The topics will be:
• Mad Scientist — So you’ve mixed baking soda and vinegar? That’s nothing compared to what we’ll whip up in this class!  Make some cool “goo” to take home.
• Fossils — Just like a paleontologist, dig up some real fossils and make your own; and
• Space Tour — Make craters on Mercury, set off a volcano on Mars, make your own rings for Saturn, learn all about the planets and more!
BOKWA® is different — Bokwa® does not require you to count steps, like a traditional eight-count followed by most dance fitness programs. Everyone can do Bokwa®: 4-year-old kids, 75-year-old men and women; people with two left feet who cannot dance, world champion Latin and ballroom dancers — all having a terrific experience in the same class! Theresa Bonner will be offering classes on three Thursdays in November on the 7th, 14th and 21st.
The cost is $6 for all three sessions. Please pre-register by e-mailing or calling the Recreation Department. Payments can be sent to school in an envelope or be dropped off at the Town Office. This is open to ages 4 and up!
We did a trial run this past month and the kids really enjoyed it, with “Sweat the Alphabet and Draw the Digits.”
