HOULTON, Maine — On Sunday, Oct. 6, members of First Congregational Church gathered to observe and celebrate their 202nd year of ministry and mission in Houlton.
Two years ago the congregation observed its 200th anniversary with much “hoopla,” including a meal, a display of photos and historical items, and a special service which included a review of their history, acted out by several members. Many members of the ecumenical community were also present to celebrate with the church. Since that bicentennial, the church has gone through many changes. Due to declining membership and an aging congregation, they made the difficult decision to sell their building, located at 45 High St. After a few months off for prayer and reflection, the membership discerned that they were still being called to be a presence in this community.
After reviewing offers from several churches, they accepted the invitation from the Houlton Unitarian Society to hold weekly worship services in their parlor at 61 Military St. on Sundays at noon. This has worked very well, with members from both congregations sharing fellowship and a coffee hour between their two services.
First Congregational Church has advertised for a part-time minister through their denomination, The United Church of Christ. In the meantime, some local clergy accepted the invitation to preach on a rotating monthly basis, and this rotation includes a lay member of the congregation.
Other pastors have also preached occasionally, including two members who are retired clergy of the church. The congregation feels especially blessed to have three experienced local ministers sharing their talents and gifts.
The Oct. 6 celebration included a time to honor two long-time members, thanks and gifts to the monthly preachers, and thanks for the many ways God has continued to lead and challenge the congregation over the past two years.
In May of 2012, the church voted to become an Open and Affirming Congregation of the United Church of Christ. The church is a “5 for 5 church,” contributing to all five yearly mission offerings of their denomination. They also give weekly to a local food pantry, contribute to local needs as they arise, and participate monthly in SAMA, the Southern Aroostook Ministerial Association. Church members are present and assist in all the local ecumenical services held during the year.
First Congregational Church, the oldest existing congregation in Houlton, is living out the truth that a church is not a building, but the people who gather weekly to worship, and then go out to live their faith during the week, through loving acts of service and mission.
