CARIBOU, Maine — The American Red Cross responds to nearly 300 fires annually in Maine, but the organization’s services extend beyond fires; they even offer a series of free smartphone apps that provide First Aid tips and warn of potential disasters. According to Danielle Hardré, Red Cross response manager, those few services are just the tip of the iceberg.
“The Red Cross partners with many community organizations and agencies to serve our neighbors before, during, and after their time of need,” she said.
According to its mission, “The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.”
The organization’s work ranges from providing food, shelter, and clothing to people affected by natural disasters to offering CPR classes at local companies.
Community members can learn more about the Red Cross by attending an informal Meet and Greet on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m., at the Emergency Management office in Caribou, 111 High Street (across from Shop and Save). Participants will hear about the role played by the Red Cross when disaster strikes, as well as the organization’s efforts to prepare people for potential disasters. Information will also be available for those interested in becoming a volunteer. Speakers will include members of the Red Cross Disaster Response Team, as well as local volunteers.
