PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — A local club is continuing efforts to make education as affordable as possible for those less fortunate through the donation of school supplies. Just in time for the start of the school year, the Presque Isle Kiwanis Club donated nearly two dozen backpacks filled with school supplies to an elementary school and the homeless shelter.
“The Kiwanis Club, in September, presented Pine Street Elementary School officials with eight backpacks and Homeless services of Aroostook with 13,” said Sue Watson, club secretary.
Joining Watson for the presentation was Penny McHatten, Kiwanis committee member.
“Loretta Clark, principal at Pine Street, and Leda Walker, representative of Homeless Services of Aroostook, accepted the backpacks, filled with school supplies, on behalf of the school and shelter,” she said.
Watson said the club voted earlier this year to donate the backpacks, filled with necessities suitable for students.
“The club voted to donate the backpacks filled with school supplies. Penny and I went shopping for backpacks and supplies at various stores. Most stores gave the club some very good deals on the items we needed,” Watson said.
Watson said the Kiwanis Club donated $500 to the cause, which was used to purchase: notebooks, pencils, crayons, pens, glue sticks, pen/pencil holders, markers and spiral tablets.
