New and improved castor oil — It will be good news to every family in America that a method has been discovered of taking the taste and odor out of castor oil. This almost indispensable household remedy, hitherto feared, detested and avoided because of its indescribable taste, now has no taste at all.

Big potato year — This is a great year for the crop that has made Aroostook great. In the country as a whole, the potato shortage is at least 25 percent this fall, but Aroostook has the largest and best crop in its history. The crop is sure to be larger than last year’s 18,000,000 bushels.

Hammond-Belyea wedding — A very pretty wedding was solemnized Sunday, Oct. 16 at the Court St. Baptist parsonage when Mary Ellen Belyea of Monticello became the bride of Wendall L. Hammond, Rev. T. L. Brindley officiating. The bridegroom is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Hammond of Houlton.

Deer harvest — The following are the number of deer tagged during the current hunting season (as of Oct. 22): Giggey’s Esso, Patten, 26; Currier’s Mkt., Houlton, 5; James McAfee, Hammond Plt., 0; Edgar Farley, Howe Brook, 0; Thelma Logie, Linneus, 3; McNelly’s, Dyer Brook, 4; Verna Bubar, Amity, 3; Velma Ordway, Sherman Stn., 3; Galen Porter, Island Falls, 5; Branscombe & Sons, Oakfield, 2; Ira Goodwin, Silver Ridge, 11; Beulah Sinclair, Stacyville, 7; Reta Malone, Haynesville, 1; Vail’s Store, Hodgdon, 2; Ora Hatfield, New Limerick, 2; Dow’s Gulf, Littleton, 1; Roland Lothrop, Monticello, 3; Bliss Small, Smyrna, 4; and Reed Plt., Wytopitlock,4. Last year during the first week, Patten’s station tagged 58 deer.

Single I95 interchange for Houlton — The State Highway Commission has recommended to the Federal Bureau of Public roads that only one interchange at Houlton be constructed with the proposed Interstate 95.

Houlton is ‘Capital for a Day’ — Houlton, the “Capital of Aroostook,” becomes the capital of Maine Tuesday as Gov. John McKernan brings his administration to the Shiretown in the continuing “Capital for a Day” program. Accompanying McKernan will be Commissioners John Atwood, public safety; Susan Collins, professional and financial regulation; Dana Connors, transportation; Rollin Ives, human services; Dean Marriott, environmental protection; Ed Meadows, conservation; Bernard Shaw, agriculture and Bill Vail, fisheries and wildlife.
Commodore club hosts public — In recognition of October being declared Computer Learning Month, a local computer club, the Southern Aroostook Commodore Users Group, invites anyone with an interest in computers and computing to an open house tonight at Houlton High School to see a demonstrations of software packages and view various types of computers including the popular MS-DOS/IBM compatibles.
