3-on-3 high school basketball tourney

    The Caribou Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a county-wide high school three-on-three basketball tournament for both boys and girls.
The tournament will be held on Saturday, Nov. 9 at the Caribou Wellness and Recreation Center. Players must currently be in grades 9-12.
The format will be a round-robin, with points given for wins to determine seeding for tournament play.
Awards will be presented to the first-place team only in both the girls’ and boys’ divisions. The deadline to register and turn in rosters is Nov. 1.

Halloween bonfire in FF

    There will be a bonfire in front of the Fort Fairfield Community Center on Oct. 31 in celebration of Halloween and all are welcome.
The fire will start at 6 p.m. and burn until approximately 7 p.m. Hot chocolate and treats will be handed out on site.

Kieffer’s college team makes it to nationals

    Paul Smiths College of New York won the women’s Yankee Small College Conference championship with a win over previously-unbeaten UM-Machias. The tournament took place Saturday at New Hampshire Technical Institute in Concord, N.H.
Former Caribou Viking Lydia Kieffer is a starting midfielder with Katie Ouellette, who played in high school at Fort Kent, also plays for the victorious Bobcats.
Kieffer had an assist in the final, which ended 2-2 after 90 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtimes. The tournament champion was determined after nine penalty shots, with the Bobcats of Paul Smiths advancing to the USCAA National Championships to be held in Charleston, West Va. Oct. 30.

UMPI students to host ‘Hawaiian’ Fit and Fun Day

    Physical Education majors from the University of Maine at Presque Isle are saying “Aloha!” as they welcome kids ages 5 to 11 to their Fit and Fun Day, taking place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26, at UMPI’s Gentile Hall.
Free registration begins at 9 a.m., with tropical-themed games, giveaways and activities to follow. Fit and Fun Day is designed to promote physical activity and healthy lifestyles for local children. This is the 18th semi-annual Fit and Fun Day.
Team games, tag and cup stacking with a Hawaiian twist are just a few of the activities that are on the agenda for the day. The pool and rock wall will be open from noon to 1 p.m., with supervision provided, so those interested in using the facilities should plan to bring swim attire and a towel. Parents need to sign a release form that will be provided during registration, in order for their children to use the pool and rock wall.

K of C Soccer Challenge

    The Knights of Columbus Local Soccer Challenge for Fort Fairfield youth (age 10-14 as of Sept. 1, 2013) will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at the soccer kick board located beside the FFMHS boys soccer field.
The contest begins at 3 p.m. and will end as soon as the last participant has had an opportunity to kick.  There are five age groups (ages 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14), with the boys competing separately from the girls.  Each participant will have 15 attempts to kick the soccer ball at an eight- by 24-foot goal with points being scored on each kick for accuracy.
The high point winner in each age group will receive an award and have the opportunity to compete in the District K of C Soccer Challenge that is scheduled to take place in Fort Fairfield on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 9 a.m.
There is no charge to participate and pre-registration is not necessary for the local competition. For more information, please call 472-3882.
