Layout will be dedicated to the memory of carpentry instructor

LIMESTONE, Maine — Officials with the Maine School of Science and Mathematics and the Limestone Recreation Department are inviting the public to attend the grand opening of the Mark Brewer Memorial Disc Golf Course on Thursday, Oct, 24 at 2 p.m. behind the Limestone Community School.
A collaborative effort between the magnet school and the rec department, the disc golf course was created to provide a fun, healthy activity to participate in that would get them outdoors and draw participants from the surrounding communities.    Spearheading the initiative, MSSM and Limestone Recreation Department obtained the grant money to fund the project, and Northern Athletic Supply in Presque Isle donated discs for the course; additional help was found when Gervais Fencing in Limestone donated the metal poles and helped to cement them into the ground, and Brooker Contracting donated the sonotubes needed for the endeavor. Under the instruction of carpentry department instructor Steve Burgess, students of the Loring Job Corps Center built and installed the course’s nets as well as the signage.
MSSM and the Limestone Recreation Department have collaborated on a number of activities throughout the year, and Rec Director Sara Shaw and Assistant Director of Residential Life Cindy Trapnell teamed up once again to obtain grant funding; both groups have expressed that they are extremely dedicated to giving back to the Limestone community and they received nearly $1,000 in grant funding from Healthy Aroostook.
The new course is one of two courses located in Aroostook County and is being dedicated to Mark Brewer, who was the longtime construction instructor at Job Corps.
He and his students at Job Corps were early volunteers on the project; Brewer was very dedicated to giving back to the community, but died suddenly prior to the construction of the course. Officials with the Rec and MSSM cite that because of Brewer’s willingness to always help and his love for his community and students, the course has been dedicated to him.
After the grand opening, the course will be open for the community to use. Discs can be rented through the Recreation Department and individuals interested in renting discs for the day are asked to call 325-4791 or 551-1204 for more information. There is no fee to play the course. If individuals want to rent a disc-set to play, there is a $5 deposit that will be returned to the player when they return the kit. The fee is only in place to cover the cost of new discs if the set is lost or not returned.
The course is located behind LCS and hole one starts in the field located between the varsity soccer field/track and the baseball field. Individuals playing the course can park in the parking lot near the LCS playground and must travel by foot to the course.
