Next Tuesday, Oct. 22, marks the last countable game for high school soccer, as the playoffs begin with the preliminary round Friday, Oct. 25 and the girls quarterfinals on Tuesday, Oct. 29.
Teams are still shuffling a bit within the standings with most games already played. In the local area, the Houlton girls have two point-worthy games remaining with Mattanawcook Academy visiting today at 4 p.m. and then the Houlton girls travel to Orono on Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest. As of the latest Class C girls Heal Point Standings Orono is first with a 10-0-1 record and a tourney index of 82.7806 points. They are followed by Fort Kent, 6-3-3, 71.5561; third, Dexter, 9-1-2, 70.5612; fourth, Houlton, 7-2-3, 63.3929; fifth, Sumner, 8-3-1, 55.2934; sixth, Madawaska, 6-3-2, 51.0204; seventh, George Stevens Academy, 5-6-1, 47.1301; eighth, Washington Academy, 7-6-0, 42.6020; ninth, Bucksport, 3-6-3, 37.1811; 10th, PCHS, 7-4-1, 31.4031 and in the final slot, Calais, 7-6-0, 31.2598.
In action this week, the Houlton girls played two of the top 11 teams in Madawaska and Calais, along with a physical Schenck team.
On Monday, the Houlton girls tied Madawaska 1-all after two overtime periods.
Madawaska had taken a 1-0 lead midway through the second half of the game when Samantha Nadeau connected for a score, but Houlton’s Alana Pratt hit the equalizer with just 4:51 left in the game.
The teams battled through two scoreless overtime periods.
Houlton goalie Tanika Toby turned back five of nine shots faced, while Madawaska’s keeper Alexis Levesque made 14 saves against 23 shots.
On Saturday in Calais, the Houlton girls pulled out a 3-1 victory. No details were available on the contest at presstime.
To start the week last Wednesday, the Lady Shires shut out Schenck, 4-0.
Three different girls scored for the Houlton team, with Emily Mooers leading the way with two goals, while Pratt and Natalie Hill added single tallies. Senior goalie Toby was perfect between the poles stopping six of six shots faced.
For Schenck, Taylor McLaughlin blocked 13 of 31 shots faced.
In the latest Class D Heal Point Standings, where 13 teams qualify for postseason, Washburn takes top honors with a 10-1-0 record and 66.8367 tourney points. Second is Ashland, 10-1-0, 59.1837; third, PVHS, 11-1-0, 54.0816; fourth, Fort Fairfield, 9-2-0, 47.7041; fifth, Van Buren, 5-5-0, 34.1837; Central Aroostook, 6-6-0, 31.8878; and seven, Shead, 5-4-0, 28.6713.
The Southern Aroostook Lady Warriors are seeded in eighth with a 7-5 record and they have accumulated 23.1544 tourney points. They were scheduled to play Woodland yesterday and will finish their season on Friday at Madawaska — a Class C opponent worth a number of points should the Southern Aroostook girls win.
In ninth is Schenck, 8-4-0, 22.3214; 10th, Easton, 3-8-0, 19.1327; 11th, Limestone/MSSM, 5-7-0, 19.1327 and capping off the qualifying teams are No. 12, East Grand, 2-9-1, 14.4944 and No. 13, Hodgdon, 3-9-2, 11.4796.
The Southern Aroostook girls will finish their season on the road, with a game in Madawaska on Friday at 4 p.m. East Grand will close their season at home on Friday at 2 p.m. against Shead.
Hodgdon has already completed its season and will wait to see how the standings shake out. Outside of the postseason realm is Katahdin in 18th position, with a 0-10-3 record. However, the Lady Cougars finish their season against Schenck today.
In last week’s action, the Class D schools battled against one another.
Katahdin 0, CAHS 7 — The Katahdin girls couldn’t keep pace with their host last Friday.
Molly Anthony scored five goals in the game to lead her Panthers, while Molly Garrison and Karli Levesque each had a goal.
East Grand 1, Woodland 2 — With a scoreless half, the Woodland Dragons picked up the win with two quick goals from Darrean Thornton and Nicole Hanson to start the second half. East Grand cut the score in half as Kim Stoddard tallied a goal on a penalty kick.
East Grand goalie Chelsea Winiarski had seven saves on 11 shots, while Woodland keeper Julia Sprague stopped six of 10 shots faced.
PVHS 9, Katahdin 0 — The Katahdin girls were blanked by visiting Penobscot Valley, as Logan Tozier, Meghan Howey and Brittney Moon each scored twice. Jenna Hope, Ashlie McKenzie and Elizabeth McKinnon scored single tallies for the winners.
Katahdin goalie Georgia Landry had 22 saves, while the Howlers’ keeper, Sami Ireland made five saves.
Southern Aroostook 4, Hodgdon 2 — The Southern Aroostook girls spread out their offense in last Tuesday’s game with Cassidy Lyons tallying a goal and an assist, while Kennedi Smith, Lily Leavitt and Chloe Raymond all had one goal apiece.
For Hodgdon, Jill Gough scored both goals.
