After The Bell
Instilling a sense of community is one of the goals of After The Bell. Join us as we lead activities to raise awareness regarding domestic violence during the month of October. We are looking for individuals, organizations, churches or clubs that want to join forces with us. We’re excited to have Full Gospel on board.
A few of our community events include a cell phone drop-off. Used cell phones are needed by the Hope and Justice Project as part of their Hope Line Project by Verizon. Do you have old cell phones that you no longer use? Is it just sitting in a drawer or do your kids play with it? Phones can be dropped off at Full Gospel Assembly in Mars Hill or at After The Bell located in All Stars on Main Street in Mars Hill. Donations will be accepted until Nov. 1. These phone may save a life.
On Friday, Oct. 18, parents can drop their children off while they get a night out. Drop off is at All Stars on Main Street at 6 p.m. and pick-up at 8 p.m. A variety of activities are planned. In addition to snacks, games, the trampoline, the foam pit, the beam and more, children will engage in an activity to raise awareness about bullying. Admission will be a donation of cleaning products — needed by survivors as they start out on their own. All items will be donated to the Hope and Justice Project.
Trunk or Treat
Trunk or Treat will take place on Thursday, Oct. 31, on Main Street in Mars Hill. You may also visit the bandstand by the fire station to drop off your old cell phones and/or cleaning products that night for After The Bell’s Hope and Justice collection. Those who make a donation that night will receive a special treat.
Does your club, organization or family want to play a special role on the activities this month? Please let Jamie know.
Halloween Dance
The Bridgewater Historical Association is holding its Halloween Dance on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 7 to 11 p.m. Tickets are $7 if you are wearing a costume or $9 if you are not. Let’s keep our tradition of everyone wearing a costume going. There will be live music by Outside In. A costume contest will be held as well as a pumpkin-decorating contest. Decorate a pumpkin, pay $2 to enter and the winner will split the pot with the hall. This event gets bigger every year so come on out and join us for a howling good time.
The Thursday night music program will end early this year. The last night will be Thursday, Oct. 24. We appreciate everyone who came to this event. We look forward to seeing everyone back in the spring. Thank you for your support.
Don’t forget we will be having the Smyrna/Merrill Historical Players back at our hall on Saturday, Nov. 2, when they bring their latest play, “I Only Have Fangs For You,” to our hall. Be prepared to laugh. See you there.
United Methodist Women
On Monday, Oct. 7, the Mars Hill UMW met in the church vestry at noon with 14 attending. Lunch was enjoyed followed by a delicious dessert made and served by co-hostesses Frances and Clara. They were assisted in serving by some of the other members. The vestry was decorated in the Halloween motif.
It was decided to have the program first, followed by the business meeting. The program started with a humorous reading by Clara. Frances then presented a humorous Christian film “A Joy Filled Life,” with technical assistance by Diane Ketchum. All found it very entertaining.
Donna Brewer conducted the business meeting, leading all in the UMW Purpose Pledge and Prayer. The secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were read and approved as read. Donna announced that our Fall Sale and Luncheon would be held on Saturday, Nov. 2, in the church vestry. Setup will take place on Friday, Nov. 1, at 10 a.m. Much discussion continued, committees were appointed and food solicited.
It was announced that the UMW would be conducting the church service on Sunday, Nov. 17. Tentative plans were made with more discussion to follow at a later date.
After the benediction, the meeting was adjourned. Guests attending included: Marjorie Grew, Betty Mahan, Penny Hickey and Gage Cronkite of Easton. Members attending included Donna Brewer, Elaine Bailey, Frances Banks, Marie Hewitt, Jackie Bradley, Joan Walsh, Joan Boone, Daisy Campbell, Diane Ketchum and Clara Hussey.

Lento family update
The Lento family fundraiser was a huge success. The family received a phone call the next day that organs had become available for Paige’s transplants. Pete flew down Sunday evening with Paige, while mom Kris made the drive to Boston. Pete reports that Paige was in surgery last Monday at 5 a.m. Twelve hours later, she was in recovery. Pete says that she is doing fantastic. Just five days after surgery, Paige has been walking a little bit and hopes to be able to leave the hospital in a couple of weeks. The family will stay in the Boston area for a while as Paige will need to be checked out often for the next few weeks. Pete says that the family is very thankful to everyone that has helped them out during this time.
