EASTON NEWS
by Hillary Hallett
Mike and Loris Allen were in Bangor on Sept. 1 to visit with their son Sgt. First Class Jay Winger. Jay has been stationed at Kandhar Air Field, Afghistan, for the past nine months. The plane Jay was on stopped for two hours to refuel in Bangor on its way back to Fort Stewart, Ga.
A great time was had by all that went to welcome him back to the states. Those present to greet him were: Mike and Loris Allen, cousin Andrew King and his wife Nicole, sons Blake and Thomas King, all of Easton; Jay’s brother, Brad Winger, his wife Tammy and nephews Jaren and Karsen Winger of Presque Isle; and Harold and Irene Williams of Holden. Jay was united at Fort Stewart with his wife, Ana, and Reese, a beloved dog. Jay’s family gave him red hotdogs to take home, as they are not available in his part of the U.S.
Sgt. Winger has 19 and a half years in the Army and will be able to retire in May of 2014. Welcome home Jay!

Harvest Safety Class
Easton High School, Easton FFA, local growers and the Maine Potato Board offered a class this past week on harvest safety.
Many of the students attending have never set foot in a potato field or in a potato house. The class consisted of classroom time with George McLaughlin, representing the MPB, and FFA Advisor Kevin Marquis. The students were shown a video produced by the Cooperative Extension that displayed the do’s and don’ts and he also brought along some visual aids to demonstrate how quickly and easily things can go wrong.
After the classroom portion of the workshop the students visited Flewelling Family Farms; owner Brent Flewelling had a potato truck, harvester and bin piler set up for the youth to tour. They all got the opportunity to sit in an operator/driver’s seat to see exactly what that person can and cannot see. Flewelling made this training mandatory for any students who plan to work on his farm this year!
