TAMC REGISTERED POLYSOMNOGRAPHER Dave Berry, on-site at Northern Maine Medical Center recently, is among the members of a collaborative NMMC/TAMC team bringing sleep medicine services to the St. John Valley.
Recently doors opened to the NMMC Sleep Disorders Laboratory in Fort Kent, located just two houses down the street from the hospital at 194 East Main Street. Within the laboratory’s walls, two sleep rooms are set up to do sleep studies, looking much like nicely appointed motel rooms, with furniture, magazines, a television and sleep monitoring equipment.
The new lab gives clients from the Upper St. John Valley and surrounding communities close-to-home access to technology, research, professionals and technicians. Together, NMMC and TAMC sleep experts focus on sleep apnea, insomnia, narcolepsy, fibromyalgia, restless leg syndrome and other conditions with a goal of tailoring treatment to help each client get a good night’s sleep.
Upon a doctor’s referral, patients are interviewed, examined and may then be scheduled for an appointment to stay overnight at the NMMC Lab, utilizing state-of-the-art monitoring equipment identical to that used at the TAMC Sleep Disorders Center in Presque Isle. In the morning, test results are transmitted electronically from the Fort Kent facility to Dr. David Weed and personnel at the Presque Isle center for evaluation.
The NMMC/TAMC Sleep Medicine Program is supported by Dr. Weed, board certified sleep medicine specialist; George C. Montee, PA-C, and Carrissa Hankins, FNP-C. Clinical services are directed by Clinical Supervisor Tina Weed, RPSGT. The Presque Isle Center, with four beds, is fully accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and has been operational since 1998.
