The Easton Wesleyan Church will be celebrating “Back to Church Sunday” on Sept. 15 along with other churches across the United States. The younger children will be singing two songs and the puppet team will be performing a backlight song.The community is encouraged to attend. Following the service there will be a luncheon. The service begins at 10:45 a.m.
Puppet team takes trip
Several members of the Easton Wesleyan Church Hands and Feet puppet team attended an International Creative Ministries Conference in Columbus, Ohio. The four-day conference consisted of training workshops and performances by professionals and teams from all over the United States and beyond. The team (made up of Bonnie DeWitt, Sara Gilman, Vaughn Martin and Toria Tarbox) attended workshops on puppetry, human video, prop making, stick drama and gospel illusion. En route to Ohio the group encountered several traffic jams, so to pass the time Vaughn entertained the other drivers with his puppet. The group reports the trip was worthwhile, informative and fun. They are anxious to prepare for their upcoming performance season.
Kiwanis Update
The Easton Kiwanis members and a guest met on Aug. 20 to discuss fund-raising ideas for the future. They wish to extend thanks to everyone in our community for the support the club received at their events this summer. Fund-raising events are winding down with only one event left: the Pine and Spurs Horse Show on Sept. 8. The club has been busy with the Easton Field Days chicken barbeque, the Northern Maine Fair and the horse shows at Pine and Spurs. The goal of their fund-raising efforts is to help with activities and needs of the students and people in our community.
The Club is busy preparing the community birthday calendar this year. Make sure you contact a Kiwanis member if you are interested in purchasing a calendar. The cost is $7. The club is always looking for new members; if you would like to join the group, please contact President Mike Allen.
Note of sympathy
Herbert Conrad Osgood passed away Aug. 18 in Belfast. He was born Jan. 26, 1932, at home in Easton, son of the late Alfaretta Maria and Harry Lee Osgood. He was known affectionately by his Aroostook friends as “Connie.” He graduated third in his class from Easton High School in 1949 and played basketball in the Eastern Maine Tournament in Bangor in 1946, 1948 and 1949. He attended the University of Maine at Orono graduating in 1955. He was a member of the Phi Eta Kappa fraternity and the University of Maine Alumni Association. After graduation, he taught school in Corinna and Newport.
In 1962, he moved to Belfast and joined the Farmers Home Administration where he worked for 23 years as county supervisor and then district director of the Belfast, Bucksport, Ellsworth, Machias and Calais regions. After leaving FHA, he operated a family farm and potato brokerage business with his brother, Fred, for many years. He made many trips to Easton in his Knickerbocker Beer truck transporting potatoes from “The County” to grocery stores and restaurants in the Belfast area and throughout central Maine.
Herb is survived by his three children and six grandchildren: Bruce Osgood and his wife, Laurie, and their daughters, Kathleen, Kristine and Kariann, of Belfast; Kimberly Dubois and her husband, Kenneth, and their son, Matthew Brian Flynn of Hudson, N.H.; and Marsha Connors and her husband, Joseph, and their son, John, and daughter, Anna, of Bangor. He is also survived by two brothers, Frederick Osgood of Easton and Robert Osgood of Brewer. Connie was predeceased by a son, Gregory Osgood. Family and friends called on Wednesday, Aug. 21, in Belfast. A memorial service was held at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church.. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Belfast Area High School Boosters Club or Waldo County Hospice.

Softball Tournament — Easton Recreation Department will be hosting a single elimination co-ed tournament on Sunday, Sept. 8, during Westfield Jubilee Days. The games will be played in Westfield starting at noontime. The cost is $50 per team. To register or receive rules please e-mail recreation@eastonme.com.
Registrations must be received by Friday, Aug. 30; rosters are due by Sept. 6 via e-mail.
Senior Trip — There will be a senior citizen field trip to Washburn for a barbecue on Thursday, Aug. 29, at 11:30 a.m. The bus departs from the Manor 10:45 a.m. Free and all are welcome to attend!
