New fall hours at the Katahdin Public Library will begin on Sept. 3. The new hours are Monday 9 a.m. to noon and 1-6 p.m.; Tuesday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and Thursday 9 a.m. to noon and 1-5 p.m. This is a change as it will no longer be open on Wednesdays. The library will be closed for lunch on Monday and Thursday, but not on Tuesdays. A children’s reading time will be held each Thursday beginning Sept. 5 at 10:30 a.m. for preschool children and this will include a half hour of stories and coloring.
The library has wireless access, three on-line computers, printing and copying, a genealogy area, local history items and books by local authors. Contact rdrew@katahdin.lib.me.us. The Historical Society will hold a two-day yard sale on Friday-Saturday, Aug. 23-24 on the grounds of the society from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. On Friday there will also be a food sale, so come and browse around and to also get some good home baked goodies. Mrs. Phyllis Jenkins and daughter, Riva, from New Hampshire have returned home after spending a few days with Riva. While here they enjoyed touring around the area, checking the family camp on Mattawamkeag Lake and meeting old friends, and eating in the local restaurants.
I finally put some sunflower seeds in one of my feeders hoping that the little birds will find them, but alas, I checked it out later in the day and there was a big gray squirrel eating every single seed just as fast as he could and he soon had cleaned the feeder. Needless to say, I am not doing that again — not until the weather gets cooler, anyways. I was happy to see late one afternoon a deer and her two fawns grazing in my back yard. the fawns were having a wonderful time leaping and chasing one another until the mother finally got them into the woods and out of sight.
