PRESQUE ISLE — University of Maine at Presque Isle Interim Athletic Director Paul Stone has announced the appointment of Ernie May as the new coach of the university’s baseball team.

May, who resides in Glastonbury, Conn., joins the Owls from Trinity College, where he served as an assistant coach for three years. May has helped guide Trinity College to 20-plus wins in each of the last three years, including a NESCAC title in 2012.
He takes over a respected Owls squad from coach Leo Saucier, whose teams set numerous program records during his tenure. Saucier resigned last spring.
“We are excited about the energy and enthusiasm for the game of baseball that Ernie is bringing with him,” said Stone. “Ernie has such a diverse background. He has literally done a little bit of everything over the years in order to support his real passion — coaching. We are fortunate to have him here in Presque Isle.”
May has coached and played baseball for over 25 years, with his most recent experience at Trinity. May graduated from Keene State University in Keene, N.H. with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and played on the baseball team. He also holds a master’s degree in education from Springfield (Mass.) College.
“I am extremely excited about the opportunity Paul Stone and the search committee have given me at UMPI,” May said. “In our minds, we will compete to be the best that day, in practice first, then on competition days. This will be achieved through year-round training and each member possessing a great passion and work ethic dedicated to the game of baseball. The team must be committed to excellence both on and off the field, not only in athletics, but in life as well.”
