Marino advances to regional final of USGA Drive, Chip and Putt Contest

    Houlton’s Drew Marino, 13, son of Misty and Tony Marino, finished first in the chipping contest and second overall in the USGA Drive, Chip and Putt Contest held for juniors in Cumberland at the Val Halla Golf Course on July 22.
    Marino now advances to the regional competition in Plymouth, Mass. on Aug. 12.

    The Drive, Chip and Putt Contest conducted 110 qualifying events in Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington and Washington D.C. from June 1 to July 15.
    Marino has moved into one of the 11 qualifying regional events, which take place in the month of August, in Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, two in Texas, Virginia and Washington.
    At the regional competition, the overall champion in each of the boys and girls division from the four age groups will play in the finals to be held April 6, 2014 at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Ga. before the Masters Tournament.
    The championship final will take place at Augusta National Golf Club and be staged on its Tournament Practice Facility (Driving/Chipping) and 18th green (Putting). The championship final will be produced and broadcast by Golf Channel.
    The Drive, Chip and Putt Championship is a free, nationwide junior skills competition for those boys and girls ages 7-15.
    Each participant will compete in all three skills (drive, chip and putt). Participants will accumulate points in each skill. The participant with the highest number of accumulated points will be declared the overall champion of their age category.
