Gervais clinches Spudland Open golf title

    PRESQUE ISLE — Despite recording five consecutive bogeys on the back nine, Porter Gervais of Houlton held on to win the 46th Coca-Cola Spudland Open, held Saturday and Sunday at Presque Isle Country Club.

    GOLF ACTION — The Spudland Open golf tournament, held Saturday and Sunday at Presque Isle Country Club, featured a field of 202 participants. Among them were, Ben Deschene, who took the B Division gross title with a 155; Matt Madore, who took first net for the A Division with a 138; and Ralph Michaud, who was second for the A Division in gross scores with a 147 and also won the Joseph J. Freeman Award for the low score among PICC members.

     Gervais had a two-stroke lead entering play on Sunday and carded a 32 over the first nine holes to lengthen the lead. However, the lefty then bogeyed the 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th holes before regaining his composure and shooting one-over-par on the final four for a score of 145.
    He ended up one stroke ahead of runner-up Jamie Leavitt of Millinocket. Ralph Michaud of Presque Isle was two back and captured the Joseph J. Freeman Award with the lowest gross score for a PICC member. Matthew Madore of Manchester, N.H. finished three back.
    Overall low net honors went to Kevin Tuttle, also of Houlton, with a 136.
    A total of 202 golfers participated. The top eight for gross and net in the four divisions of play are as follows:
