Kindergarten students at the Houlton Elementary School recently enjoyed a visit from Maine Forest Ranger George Harris. During that week’s curriculum, one of the instructional read aloud books in the kindergarten reading program was “Hot Shots,” by Chris DeMarchant. This non-fiction book tells how wild land fire fighters, known as “Hot Shots” manage and put out a wild land fire.
Harris came dressed in the green Nomex pants and yellow Nomex shirt that is worn by hot shot crews. He wore his hard hat and pack and his harness with his radio. He looked exactly like the pictures in the book. He showed the children this equipment and answered their questions about how he uses it and why he needs it.
He also demonstrated some of the tools that he uses to fight fires in his job. He talked to the children about being safe with fire, to never touch matches or lighters and that a grown up needs to make sure campfires are completely out. His visit brought the book to life for the students.
