Halvorson
is Maine Sports Legends’ scholar-athlete
The Northern Region of Maine Sports Legends selected its Scholar/Athletes for 2013, with Carla Halvorson of Easton and Nicholas Lunn of Hodgdon both set to receive $500 scholarships at the annual banquet at the Alfond Girls and Boys Club on Oct. 13.
A large number of excellent applicants were received from all over Aroostook County and the Northern directors of Maine Sports Legends wish to thank all who took the time to apply for the scholarship.
Eight scholarships (four to girls and four to boys) will be given out to students throughout the state.
Carla Halvorson graduated from Easton High School as the valedictorian and participated in varsity volleyball, soccer and basketball. She was captain of soccer and basketball teams her junior and senior seasons.
She was state winner of the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award, won the Butch Shaw soccer award as the top Class D player in Aroostook County and was chosen as an Aroostook League Scholar/Athlete.
In soccer, she was selected to the All-Aroostook, All-Eastern Maine and all-state teams. She holds the school record for goals in a career with 94 and also dished out 22 assists.
In basketball, she was selected to the All-Aroostook team and played in the Aroostook County Senior All-Star Classic. Halvorson was Maine McDonald’s Academic All-State team member and was also named an all-star by Maine Basketball Report.
She was selected to the volleyball all-star team.
Off the court and playing field, Halvorson was a member of the Key Club and National Honor Society, to which she was state president her senior year.
She also participated in Student Council, math team and one-act play.
She received the Maine Principal’s Association award, was the yearbook editor and captured top student awards in many subjects.
Halvorson volunteered as a tutor at the elementary school, coached and officiated for the Easton Recreation Department and was active in many church organizations.
The daughter of Charles and Traci Halvorson, she will be attending Cedarville University in Ohio, majoring in exercise science.
Nicholas Lunn
Lunn graduated from Hodgdon High School as the valedictorian and participated in his school’s varsity golf, soccer, basketball, baseball and cross country teams.
He was selected to the All-Aroostook team in cross country, basketball and baseball. In basketball he was also selected to play in the Aroostook County Senior All-Star Classic.
Lunn was a state winner of the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award. He was also a National Merit Qualifier and a class officer who served as president for three years. He was member of the National Honor Society and served as an officer in that organization.
Lunn was a member of the school band and chorus and was an All-Aroostook and all-state voice recipient. He performed main roles in the Hodgdon High School musical.
In the community, Lunn volunteered at the Living Waters Camp and competed in the United Way’s Northern Star competition. He worked weekly for four years at his church’s “children’s club,” assisting in games and memorization.
He will be attending the University of Maine at Orono to major in computer engineering. He is the son of Mark and Debbie Lunn.
