Presque Isle’s White uses education from technology centers in a fishy way

PRESQUE ISLE — Some fish at the Presque Isle Technology Center have a new home this summer thanks to the skilled efforts of a student at the Caribou Regional Technology Center earlier this spring.

Recent graduate Allan White, of Presque Isle, used the education he received from both the Presque Isle Technology Center and the Caribou Regional Technology Center to craft a stand for a 250-gallon fish tank — which weighs in at around 2,200 pounds. White is shown here welding together pieces of the stand.

Allan White of Presque Isle built a stand capable of holding the 250-gallon fish tank that weights about 2,200 pounds for the PITC classroom agricultural science teacher Shelly Gross.
Efforts began at the Presque Isle center, when White was asked by his drafting technologies teacher Terry Harper to draw up some plans with help of South Portland-based structural engineer John Leisure. As the tank’s weight meant a pretty complicated design, White was able to utilize Harper’s knowledge and had the plans finalized in about two weeks.
Once Leisure gave the final schematics a thumb’s up, materials were ordered and White took the design over to the Caribou Regional Technology Center.
Working with his welding/metal technology instructor Keith Dumond in Caribou to make sure all the cuts were correct, the project was fully fabricated about two weeks later — ready to be painted and delivered. White said that Coty Cameron was also a big help on the project.
“This was all a great experience for me and the experience is priceless and it helps me to understand what a big project is about.” White wrote in his project report. “We’ve worked on countless projects in (the welding class) but this one was the one I am most proud of.”
White will be furthering his education in welding at the Northern Maine Community College this fall.
