Caribou spring athletes honored with PVC awards

    Caribou’s Ashley Richards was named Penobscot Valley Conference girls’ Class B tennis player of the year. Just completing her senior season, Richards also headlined the Class B girls’ tennis singles first team.

  The Penobscot Valley Conference handed out its post-season awards recently, and several local athletes gained recognition.
    In Class B softball, Caribou’s Jordyn Doucette and Amber Bonewicz earned spots on the first team.

    They were joined by Brittany Cousins, Kendra Hayward and Rachel Martin, all of Old Town; Karli Thebarge and Shannon Graves, both of Hermon; Cristin Wright of Ellsworth, Kassidy Seeley of Washington Academy and Hannah Shaw of Mount Desert Island.
    Kristin Espling of Caribou was selected to the second team.
    Others were Liza Buck, Shea Brown and Laurin Ackerson, all of Presque Isle; Meaghan Leighton and Sami Milton, both of Old Town; Allessa Oakes and Claire Peterson, both of Hermon; Emily Berry of Ellsworth, Karrie O’Donnell of John Bapst and Haley Littlefield of MDI.
    All-academic team members from Caribou are Espling, Victoria Bouchard and Amber Landeen-Peterson.

    Caribou’s Matt Curry was named to the Class B baseball second team in honor of his strong season on the mound and at the plate.

    Cousins was named player of the year, Seeley and Hayward co-pitchers of the year and Old Town’s Jenn Plourde coach of the year. Old Town won the team championship and Hermon was the runner-up.
    In the final statistics for the conference, Bonewicz and Doucette were first and second, respectively, in hits with 35 and 34. The duo was also second and third in batting average. Bonewicz hit .593 and Doucette .586.
    Espling was eighth in batting average at .490 and tied teammate Kristin Plante for ninth in hits with 24.
    Plante was second in singles with 24, followed by Doucette in sixth with 21 and Anesha Hershey in seventh with 20. Bonewicz was in a tie for ninth in the category with 19.
    Bonewicz, Doucette and Victoria Bouchard made up the top three in doubles with 14, 10 and nine, respectively. Espling was fifth with eight.
    Bonewicz, Doucette and Espling hit two home runs each, tying for second in the conference.
    For RBI, Doucette was second with 27 and Bonewicz right behind with 25. Bouchard was eighth with 20.
    In runs scored, Bonewicz had 25 and was third and Doucette was sixth with 23. Hersey had 11 steals, placing her in a tie for 10th.
    Doucette was ninth in innings pitched with 51, ninth in ERA at 5.07, ninth in strikeouts with 39 and tied for seventh in victories with five. Bonewicz was 10th in innings pitched with 50, eighth in strikeouts with 48 and tied with Doucette for seventh in wins with five.
    For baseball, Caribou’s Dean Walker were named to the first team. Joining him were Tyler Seeley and Saul Nunez, both of Presque Isle; Gage Feeney and Fred MacLean, both of Washington Academy; Evan Pelkey and Shawn Curran, both of John Bapst; Will Perkins of Hermon, Ben Walls of MDI, Ryan Rebar of Foxcroft Academy and Cameron Archer of Old Town.
    Caribou’s Matt Curry was part of the second team, which also included Hunter Law, Cameron Fadley, Jesse Provost and Kaleb Smith, all of Foxcroft Academy; Tom Burns and Nolan Webber, both of John Bapst; Tyler Varney of Washington Academy, Connor Maguire of Ellsworth and Jon Phelps of MDI.
    Caribou’s Walker and Michael Selander were all-academic selections.
    Rebar was named both player of the year and pitcher of the year and John Bapst’s Dave Gonyar was chosen as coach of the year.
    In the final statistics, Selander was second in the PVC with 24 hits and Walker fourth with 23. Curry finished sixth with 21.
    Selander (.453) and Walker (.451) were second and third, respectively, in batting average. Selander was tops in singles with 22 and Walker was tied for second with 19. Curry was fifth with 17.
    Curry had 16 RBI, placing him in a tie for fifth, while teammates Matt Milliard and Dylan Berkoski were part of a five-way tie for 10th with 13 each.
    Walker’s 20 runs led the conference and his 14 steals were good for third place.
    Curry was ninth in innings pitched with 33, sixth in ERA at 1.48 and ninth in strikeouts with 26.
    Ashley Richards of Caribou made the girls’ tennis first team in singles and was also named player of the year. Also on the first team were Ina Maloney of Ellsworth and Jessica Allen of Hermon. Making up the doubles first team were Sarah Shelton and Mackenzie Myers of MDI and Sarah Phelps and Ivy Wallace, also of MDI.
    Caribou’s Alexa Massey was a second team singles player, joining Presque Isle’s Kayla Girardin and Sarah Gilson, Madeline Cook of MDI and Jessica Toothaker of Ellsworth.
    The second team in doubles consisted of Blair Bailey and Michelle Cawley, both from Presque Isle.
    PI’s Monica Bearden was selected as coach of the year.
    Ellsworth won the conference title and Caribou was the runner-up.
    On the boys’ side, Caribou’s Brendan Cyr and Tyler Willey were on the first team in doubles, along with Caleb Cough and Sam Jacobson, both of MDI.
    The first team singles players were Wei Yen Huang of Washington Academy, Luke Horton of MDI and Matt Dunning of John Bapst.
    For the second team, Ethan Plourde of Caribou made it, along with Liam Hughes of Presque Isle, Ben Smith of Old Town, Evan Toothaker of Ellsworth and Ryan Ding of John Bapst. Woofie Kaiser and Sam Walker of MDI were selected in doubles.
    Huang was named player of the year and Ben Rowell of MDI was the coach of the year.
    Caribou players on the all-academic tennis team were Richards, Emma Duplissie-Cyr, Willey, Massey and Zachary Gorence.
    In girls’ track and field, Caribou’s Alissa Irving and Meredith Sleeper made the second team in the race walk.
    Mitchell St. Peter of Caribou was a first team selection in the race walk and Austin Griffeth and Tyler Strid made the second team in the same event.
    Caribou’s all-academic team members for track and field are Meredith Sleeeper, Olivia Sleeper, Alexis McCrossin, Alissa Randolph, Tiffany Bishop, Hannah Hebert, Reanna Plourde, Chelsea Bard, Jubilee MacLeod and Ron Lund.
