Halfway Home Pet Rescue volunteers literally have kittens by the dozen, with 14 available for immediate adoption and an another 25 still growing toward that ninth week when they can go to a new home. “Hopefully, you will be ready and waiting for them,” Milton said. Kittens of every possible color await adoption. “Sorry, we don’t have any purple and that is what one little girl really wanted,” Milton said. “These kittens have all age appropriate shots, wormed, flea and tick protection and are adoption ready with a voucher for spay and neutering,” she added. This little gray cat, above, was rescued from the roadside by Caribou residents Kevin and Kate McCartney. The 12-week old kitten’s leg and pelvis had been broken when she was struck by a car, and the McCartney’s picked her up off the side of the road and brought to her HHPR. That’s why HHPR volunteers are celebrating the McCartneys as Kitty Heroes. The shelter can be visited on Saturday from noon until 3 p.m. at 489 Main Street in Caribou — and the facility has a new outside play yard so that the adult cats can enjoy the sunshine until a forever home is found. To help place the adult cats over 6- months old, HHPR is celebrating the Fourth of July by giving them away for free to good homes on Saturday, July 6 (during regular business hours).
