On Tuesday, June 4, 28 students at Fort Street Elementary School were awarded College Aspiration Scholarships by Maine College Circle, with support from Dead River Company.
This is the second year Maine College Circle has conducted College Aspirations workshops for grades 3-6 in Maine schools. The workshops discuss the idea and value of higher education, the opportunities that are available for everyone and why college is essential.
“For some kids, college is naturally part of the plan throughout their childhood. For many kids, however, it’s not even thought of as a possibility — not because they’re not smart enough, but because they can’t see a clear path of aspiration to their dream for the future,” said Bob Stuart, executive director of Maine College Circle. “Kids can’t aspire to something they don’t understand. But they all have dreams. What we do is illustrate that to achieve those dreams, you need some sort of education beyond high school. We all recognize that we must reach them with information and inspiration while they are still in elementary school, before they choose another path.”
“Of course we want to encourage children toward four-year degrees, but also toward vocational and technical education. We want them to aspire to greater knowledge, to careers in a profession or a trade,” Stuart added.
“As a local, family-owned business and one of the larger employers in the state of Maine, Dead River Company understands and values the importance of higher education,” said Mike Ouellette, market manager at the Madawaska office of Dead River Company. “The work Maine College Circle does reaches our youth at an important age and provides the foundation to help them set goals and aspire to reach those goals. With a long tradition of supporting the communities we serve, Dead Rover is proud to give back to our most important asset — our children.”
The College Aspirations Scholarships are awarded to grade-school students based on an essay on college and career aspirations. Scholarships are redeemable upon enrollment in any post-secondary educational program.

Rotary Club
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday, June 18, at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center. The guest speakers were Kristin Wilkinson, marketing manager with PenAir Airlines, and Ellen Nickerson, customer service manager for PenAir in Presque Isle. PenAir, The Spirit of Alaska, was founded in 1955 and grew to a fleet of 40 passenger aircraft as well as having air taxis. Their original coverage area in Alaska traveled into communities not accessible by roads.
They have continued to expand in Alaska and now partner with Alaska Airlines. The city of Anchorage is their hub, with two large maintenance hangers there. Their motto is “safety through compliance” and they are proud of their safety record.
As other carriers have expanded to cover the smaller communities, they have changed their business coverage to travel into 10 stations in Alaska and also four on the East Coast, flying out of Boston. Along with their scheduled flights, they do a number of charter flights for the oil and fishing industries.
Their East Coast flights go into: Presque Isle, Plattsburgh, N.Y., Bar Harbor (seasonal) and will start flying to Long Island in July. They have 13 Saab S340 planes and two Saab All Freighters, with 440 employees.
