Lawmakers need to hear from readers

To the editor:
I think we can all agree that Maine is dealing with some difficult and serious budget challenges. What worries me is that it seems the people who have the least to give are the target for some of the deepest budget cuts.

Some 80,000 people rely on the Drugs for the Elderly Program (DEL) for their prescription drugs. These are Maine’s lowest income citizens. For many it is the DEL that helps them live independent lives in their own homes and communities. Without this program they will not be able to afford their much-needed prescriptions. Some may be forced into institutional care which is, of course, a much more expensive option for the state. Yet, the elimination of the DEL is being talked about in Augusta.
Also being talked about in Augusta are deep cuts to the Medicare Savings Program (MSP) which helps 40,000 at-risk Mainers. The MSP pays for Medicare Part B premiums, paying for things like doctor visits, preventive care and ambulance services. The MSP also covers Medicare Part D prescription drug costs and co-payments.
Cutting or eliminating either program begs the question – what are these people to do? They won’t be able to absorb additional living expenses because they are already pushed to the limit financially. The state has alternatives. These individuals do not.
Decisions about the MSP and the DEL are being made now and we should all call our legislators to tell them how we feel about these devastating proposed budget cuts.
