Thinking about hot-topping your driveway but not sure who to hire to do the work?
There are plenty of legitimate and reputable paving companies in northern Maine to do business with. If you are not familiar with a particular paving company, do your research before signing a contract. Asphalt paving scams are most likely to occur this time of year. Avoid victimization and consider the following suggestions:
Beware of unsolicited offers to do paving work. Do not let the solicitors inside your home. If you’re not interested in what they’re offering, calmly but firmly tell the solicitors you are not interested and tell them to leave your property. If they refuse your instructions, call the police.
Educate yourself and your family. Search the Internet for “paving scams.”
Ask to see proof of the solicitors’ insurance. Con men rarely have worker’s compensation insurance and if one of them is injured at your home, the claim could be made against your homeowner’s insurance.
Call the police if they being “working” without your consent for service. Once you sign a contract, there is a three-day waiting period before work can commence. Take the time to check up on the contractor and don’t give them any money in advance.
Be a good neighbor. Paving scams target senior citizens.
Call the police if you have questions, or if unfamiliar people or companies appear at your door or in your neighborhood.
Remember, stay safe and don’t be a victim. Call the Houlton Police Dept. at 207-532-2287 or 911 for emergencies.
