Former CAHS hoop standouts
to play for UMFK Bengals
FORT KENT — Former Central Aroostook players Mike McClung and Joe Stiles have agreed to attend and play basketball at the University of Maine at Fort Kent beginning this fall.
McClung, a 6-foot-7 forward who will study criminal justice-public safety at UMFK, averaged 17 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks per game as a senior captain during the 2011-2012 season when he was named to the Maine Sunday Telegram All-State Team, All-Aroostook Team and Maine McDonald’s Senior All-Star Team.
UMFK head coach Eric Werntgen said that “the Bengal basketball family is extremely excited to finally welcome Mike as a member of our fine university, community and basketball program. We feel Mike will flourish in Fort Kent as a student-athlete.”
McClung will rejoin former Central Aroostook teammate Stiles, who also has also agreed to study and play for UMFK next fall. McClung and Stiles played together for two seasons and were members of the 2011 Class D state champions.
Stiles, who plans to study public safety administration, helped lead his Panthers to the Eastern Maine title game this past winter. The versatile guard averaged 18 ppg during the Eastern Maine tournament, earning him a spot on the Bangor Daily News all-tournament team.
“Joe has a great motor, can shoot the ball at a high percentage from behind the arc and brings a championship mentality to UMFK,” Werntgen said.
