PRESQUE ISLE — Two local fitness instructors will join others in Portland on June 22 to help raise money for One Fund Boston, to benefit the Boston Marathon bombing victims and their families.
Renee Chalou-Ennis and Stephanie McKeen Caverhill, Zumba fitness instructors and owners of LiveWell United on North Street in Presque Isle, invite others to join them in Portland for a free Zumba class, hosted by fellow Zumba fitness instructor Leanne Weston.
“The event is called ‘For the Love of Boston Zumbathon’ and will be held at UNE (University of New England) in Portland. Money raised will benefit victims and their families affected by the Boston Marathon bombing earlier this year,” said Chalou-Ennis.
She said the event will be a lot of fun, held for a good cause.
“We’ll throw an extra long dance party. We’re accepting donations to bring with us to Portland. Or, if anyone wants to join us, they’re welcome to attend the event in Portland and make their donation there,” Chalou-Ennis said.
“We’ll have healthy snacks, all your favorite party songs and glitter – lots and lots of glitter,” said Chalou-Ennis.
So far, Chalou-Ennis said she’s sure of at least eight people who plan to make the trip.
“We’re all really excited,” she said.
Chalou-Ennis said she has personal reasons for supporting the cause.
“Maine native, runner, motivational speaker and MDI Marathon founder Gary Allen participated in the Boston Marathon. Gary came to Aroostook County in 2011 to participate in the Aroostook Dirty 30, which is where I met him. He was uninjured but was close by when the bombings occurred and experienced the horrible aftermath,” she said.
“I have many friends in Boston, some with whom I talk to weekly on Facebook or through messages. It’s important that I do something – anything I can to show there’s more good people than bad people in this world,” continued Chalou-Ennis.
She said a Zumba fundraiser was an easy choice, given the nature of the classes.
“Zumba fitness is about love, happiness, sharing and giving your time to whomever needs it. I’m really looking forward to our free class on the 20th and the ‘For the Love of Boston’ fundraiser on June 22,” said Chalou-Ennis.
Chalou-Ennis said the free Zumba class on June 20 will give local participants an opportunity to send donations with the instructors, should class members be unable to attend the actual event June 22.
Donations can also be mailed to: LiveWell United, 15 North St., Presque Isle, ME 04769, with checks made out to “One Fund Boston.”
