County race track hoping to draw fans

CARIBOU — Despite the tough economy, passport requirements for Canadian fans and competitors and the forced cancellation of several events due to weather over the past couple years, Spud Speedway owner Troy Haney is pressing on in his challenge to continue to grow racing in the region.

“The most important part is getting participation from the local community,” Haney said in a prepared statement. “We need racers to bring their cars and race and we need people to support the cause and attend some of the events that with a lot of hard work are brought to The County each and every year.”
Haney purchased the race track in 2009. The facility now has a new light system, sound system, handicap-accessible bathrooms, a concession building and an expanded pit area. Most recently, Spud Speedway has added a new go-kart race track and victory lane area.
“I’m optimistic we will continue to grow,” Haney said. “There are rule changes which have proven to create a more equalized, competitive race format, and now we have built an affordable place for kids to get involved by racing go-karts.”
He encourages fans to come out and support racing and the local track in its 49th year of operation.
“The cost of operation is very expensive because of facility upkeep, insurance, prize money, staff and other things,” Haney said, “and the only offset to that is for people to attend and enjoy the very affordable entertainment that is offered.”
This year’s season finally got under way June 9 after a couple of cancellations due to rain.
The next event is scheduled for Sunday, June 23 at 1 p.m., with the Canadian Atlantic Open Wheel Tour making a stop at Spud Speedway for the third year in a row.
“This is their only stop in the United States as they look for valuable championship points in the early season,” Haney said.
One of the largest fireworks shows north of Bangor is set for July 3. The “Day of Destruction” events include a monster truck show, the Wicked Good Vintage Tour and the weekly door-to-door racing action with all the local competitors.
The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 5-16. Family passes are offered for $25, which allows admission for two adults and two children.
Spud Speedway is located at 209 Thompson Road in Caribou.
