Speakers explain center’s activities

MARS HILL NEWS

by Tomi Henderson

The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday, June 4, at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center. The speakers were Vicki Jackson and Connie Durost from the Activities Department at the Aroostook Health Center.

They spoke about working with new residents and their families to help make moving to the facility easier. Residents give up a lot when they find it necessary to move to a nursing home. They are moving into a shared room and have to limit the items they have room for.
They work hard at finding ways to keep the residents stimulated with many different happenings. At the facility, they play Bingo — a particular favorite among everyone — card games, Wii bowling with both residents and staff competing, take part in musical activities, various church services and more.
They have a van and take trips to a number of places, from the mall to different restaurants. They have even taken a trip to Hollywood Slots, which residents still talk about. The van has over 20 regular seats, but they are limited to taking less than 10 due to many residents needing to travel in their wheelchairs.
While Vicki and Connie continually work at finding new activities to add to the things they offer residents, they know that the entire staff at the facility is part of making everything run smoothly.
If you have ideas for new activities, call Vicki or Connie at the Aroostook Health Center at 768-7915. Volunteers are always needed and are welcome to come to the facility to see what they can do, from visiting to playing games to puzzles.
