Students honored at academic banquet

    FORT KENT — Thirty-Five awards and 17 scholarships were presented to University of Maine at Fort Kent students at the Senior Class Banquet and Awards Convocation on Friday, May 17, in the UMFK Sports Center.

    The annual event, held the evening prior to commencement, is designed to honor graduating students for outstanding achievement throughout their years at the University and to award underclassmen, who are continuing their education at UMFK, with financial assistance in recognition of their hard work and campus involvement.
    The Gretchen Prize in Fine Arts, which recognizes a student who shows exceptional initiative and industry in the visual arts, was awarded to Brenda LaCombe of Wallagrass.
    In addition to awards, students were presented with scholarships at the annual banquet.
    Receiving a scholarship from the Associated Faculties of the University of Maine System, Fort Kent Chapter was Travis Thomas Powers of Presque Isle, who also was presented with the Thomas S. Pinkham Memorial Scholarship.
    The Presidential Award for Academic Excellence, awarded to students who have achieved the dean’s list for seven consecutive semesters at UMFK, was presented to Jamie Lynn Pelletier of Eagle Lake.

Area students graduate

    FORT KENT — The University of Maine at Fort Kent graduating seniors received their degrees at the 131st commencement exercises at the University of Maine at Fort Kent on May 18. University President Wilson G. Hess presided over the ceremony that conferred 148 bachelor degrees and 31 associate degrees.
    In addition to awarding the diplomas to the class of 2013, President Hess conferred the Honorable John L. Martin with an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters.
    Local students receiving degrees included:
• Eagle Lake — Nicole Bouchard and Jamie Pelletier, bachelor of science in nursing; Alex Devoe, bachelor of university studies in secondary education; Mindy Morneault, bachelor of science in biology; Jennifer Parks, bachelor of university studies behavioral science; Loren Plourde, bachelor of science in business; and Natasha Ponder, associate of arts in criminal justice;
• Easton — Melissa Cowley-Perry, bachelor of science in nursing;
• Mapleton — Jamie Allen, associate of arts in general studies; Matthew Chasse, associate of science in applied forest management; and Patricia Eldershaw, bachelor of science in nursing;
• Mars Hill — Alexandria Dame, Tonya Pinette and Jennifer Tweedie, bachelor of science in nursing; Mitchell Folsom, associate of science in applied forest management; and Lisa Sutton, bachelor of science in behavioral science;
• Presque Isle — Gabrielle Cyr, Tiffany Martin and Russ Mortland, bachelor of science in nursing; and Lucas Roy, associate of arts in criminal justice; and
• Winterville — Monique Boutot, bachelor of science in nursing; and Beatrice Nadeau, bachelor of science in behavioral science.
