WASHBURN NEWS

The Last Chapel and Graduation Ceremony for the Washburn High School seniors will be on Friday, June 7.   Last Chapel will be at 1 p.m. Graduation will be at 7 p.m. in the Washburn High School Gymnasium.

Last week students at Washburn Elementary School competed in Penny Wars. The Penny Wars were a fund-raising competition between each grade to raise money for Relay for Life. Each class had a container outside their classroom to collect pennies to see which class could collect the most. Only the pennies counted, but students could place silver coins, nickels, dimes, etc. in other class containers — the silver was subtracted from the pennies in determining the winner. The winning class collecting the most pennies, raising $371.60, was the 2nd grade class earning a trip this past Friday to see “Epic” at the movie theater. The 4th grade class collected the most money raising $758. In total the elementary students raised $2,266.45 for Relay for Life.

BOSTON TRIP — The Washburn High School Wookworking Club recently took a trip to Boston. Participants included, from left: Sean Sperrey, Joe Bouchard, Devin Thompson, Nick Bragg, Michael Ericson, Nick Silver, Chandler Dobson and Instructor Don Hanson.

The Washburn Woodworking Club, newly created this year by Mr. Don Hanson, raised money by building and selling everything from moose-head coat racks to sheds. The group was hired by the Washburn Rotary Club members to refurbish the Washburn Recreational Center and to erect playground equipment at the pond. The money they raised went towards an educational trip to Boston over Memorial Day weekend. They visited the Museum of Science, Boston Aquarium, Zoo of New England and a Boston Red Sox game.

In the pink

Students at WDHS turned out last week dressed in pink to remember a County woman, Heidi Graham, who just passed away from breast cancer and to remind everyone to wear pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness.

GUEST SPEAKER — Bill Thomas, a Red Cross volunteer who recently served as guest speaker at a Washburn Rotary Club meeting, is pictured at left with Rotarian Dana Woodman, at right. The men are pictured with the Red Cross emergency response vehicle.

On May 15 the Washburn Rotary Club had as its evening speaker Bill Thomas. Bill has been a volunteer with the Red Cross since 2007 and told some interesting stories of the disasters that he has worked with and of the people he has met. He distributed materials about the Red Cross, and then gave club members a tour of the emergency response vehicle that the Red Cross uses.
This week is Rotary Awareness Week!
