MARS HILL NEWS
by Tomi Henderson
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday, May 28, at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center. The speakers were Jason Parent and Sandy Gauvin. They spoke about the Aroostook Aspirations Initiative, a scholarship fund to support the education goals of the youth in our region and mobilize the future prosperity of Aroostook County.
There are six components to the initiative’s plan. First is an annual aspirational weekend to work with students on areas such as financial literacy, self-confidence, goal-setting, etc., have business leaders speak about jobs in The County and the fact that our youth can stay in Aroostook and be successful, learn entrepreneurial skills and complete a service project at the end of each weekend. Second is to create summer internships for the students to help them understand the career they are pursuing, meet others in that profession and network with potential employers. Third is to host an entrepreneurial program for any older graduates to encourage and help them gain skills and knowledge that will help them stay in Aroostook County. Fourth is to hold a gala each year to showcase and celebrate the scholarship recipients. Fifth is to sponsor a major service-learning project that will engage students of all ages in partnering with local organizations to meet community needs. Finally, there will be 16 $1,000 scholarships given out each year — one at each high school in Aroostook County. The recipients will be attending one of the colleges in the county: NMCC, UMPI, UMFK or the Aroostook Branch of Husson. First preference will be given to students that are economically disadvantaged or are the first generation of their family to attend college.
The 10-year goal of the initiative is to be able to give multiple scholarships to students in The County for multiple years of their college career and to raise an endowment of $5,000,000 to fund these scholarships. For more information, go to www.gauvinfund.org.
