Senate approves measure to protect rural communities in economic development programs

AUGUSTA – A measure sponsored by Assistant Senate Majority Leader Troy Jackson (D-Allagash) aimed at preserving small rural communities’ ability to apply for certain community development block grants received initial approval in the Maine Senate yesterday by a vote of 19 to 16.

“It is very tough for communities to receive grants as it is, even if they come forward with strong proposals,” said Senator Jackson. “It is unfair that most Maine communities can’t apply, and that puts them at a disadvantage. This bill allows them to have a fair shot.”
The measure, L.D. 1499, was submitted in response to proposed Department of Economic and Community Development rules that would limit these grants to communities with populations of 3,000 people or more, which would effectively eliminate most of Aroostook County, and over 400 Maine communities in all, from eligibility.
The measure faces more votes in the House and Senate.
