Wildcats compete in PVC track meet

    BREWER — The Penobscot Valley Conference track and field championship meet for large schools was held Monday. It was originally planned for Saturday, but was pushed back due to rain.

    The Presque Isle Wildcats posted 26 points, with two athletes combining to score all the points. Junior Mitchell Ayotte was second in the long jump with a mark of 19 feet, 8.5 inches, third in the high jump at 5 feet, 6 inches and fourth in the triple jump at 38 feet, 7.25 inches. Senior Gabe Player placed in both hurdling competitions, taking third in the 300-meter event in 44.71 seconds and fifth in the 110 in 17.14 seconds.
    As a team, Presque Isle finished in eighth place out of nine teams. Brewer was the winner with 118 points and Hampden Academy the runner-up with 108.
    The Presque Isle girls posted 29 points in the meet. Freshman Regan Nelson had a big day by winning the discus with a throw covering 90 feet, 10 inches. She also placed third in the shot put at 30-3. PI’s Amanda Bennett was first in the 1,600-meter race walk in 8:31.57 and teammate Bonnie Corey was sixth in 10:19.52.
    The Wildcats’ other points came in the relays. The 4×800 team (11:59.95) and 4×100 team (55.79) both came in sixth place.
    Presque Isle came in eighth place out of nine teams. Bangor won with 142 points and Brewer was second with 110.
    The Class B state meet is set for Saturday, June 1 in Bath, while the Class C meet, which will includes Washburn and Fort Fairfield athletes, takes place that same day in Dover-Foxcroft. Both events begin at 10 a.m.
