Gorneault, Wright shine at Sugarloaf

    CARABBASSETT VALLEY — P.J. Gorneault of Caribou topped a field that included 454 other runners and won the Sugarloaf 15K Road Race, held May 19.

    Gorneault had a time of 48 minutes and 50 seconds to take the title.
    Elizabeth Wright of Mapleton was 78th overall and 33rd among the 316 females competing. She finished in 1:12:03.
    Kyle Bartley (1:19:36.5) and Heidi Bartley (1:32:8.2), both of Presque Isle, were the other area runners to compete.
    In the marathon held that same day, numerous Aroostook County runners took part.
    Placing 12th out of 152 females was Kimberley Wright of Mapleton, who was competing in her first 26.2-mile race. She recorded a time of 3:32:21.1 and ran under the qualifying time for next year’s Boston Marathon. She was also first in the 50-54 age division.
    Rene Gorneault of Caribou placed 26th among females and seventh in the 35-39 age division in 3:42:33.6.
    Mariana Mendible and Alyssa Saucier, both of Caribou, had times of 4:56:32.4 and 4:56:41.5, respectively, as the other local female competitors.
    For men, Craig Dubay of Connor Township finished in 3:48:03.4. Andres Fleury of Caribou came in at 3:54:35.9 and Shawn Laferriere, also of Caribou, crossed the line in 4:07:54.6. Another Caribou runner, Mike Saucier, recorded a time of 4:14:50.6.
