Presque Isle High School graduate Madelyn Carson sang “The Star-Spangled Banner,” while the Mapleton Boy Scouts assisted by raising the flags. Representing the Presque Isle VFW and all veterans, Rod Cameron, Dale Eaton and Andy Kinney placed the memorial wreaths on the monument stones at the Mapleton Elementary School.
This year’s guest speaker was Jon Frederick, Senior Chief Petty Officer Retired from United States Coast Guard. Frederick is the town manager for Mapleton, Chapman and Castle Hill and a member of the Mapleton Lions Club. He reminded everyone of sacrifices our veterans have made including the supreme sacrifice of one’s life.
As part of his speech, he recounted an incident in his father’s military career during the Vietnam War. A short time ago, Frederick and his wife attended the commissioning of their son, where he received his son’s first salute as a commissioned officer. Frederick reflected his pride in his son and the pride he has in all who have served our country. The Mapleton Lions Club thanked Frederick and all those who participated in the day’s activities.
Following a moment of silence, two trumpeters from the Presque Isle Middle School Band played “Taps.”

MAPLETON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL was the recipient of a $1,000 grant from Graves’ Shop ‘n Save in Presque Isle. The four-month Hannaford Helps Schools program encouraged shoppers to purchase products from participating companies. The school that raised the most funds was awarded the grant. An additional $1,080 was also awarded to 12 local schools in the area. Attending the check presentation were, from left, front row: Ian Willard, kindergarten; and Kolbie Langley, pre-K. Middle row: Jack Hallett, grade 2; Jayden Lovely, grade 3; Taylor Guerrette, grade 5; Cameron Levasseur, grade 4; and Jack Buck, grade 1. Back row: Ryan Graves, assistant store manager; Dan Duprey, principal; and Don Samiya, store manager.

Graves’ Shop ‘n Save Store Manager Donald Samiya recently presented a check in the amount of $1,000 to Mapleton Elementary School as a grant for raising the most dollars through the Hannaford Helps Schools program.
Under the terms of the program that ran from Sept. 5-Dec. 5, shoppers could raise funds for local schools by purchasing participating products. This year, there were more than 900 eligible products, including Hannaford brand items and products.
According to Samiya, there was no limit on the amount that could be raised by each school. Graves’ Shop ‘n Save has awarded an additional $1,000 education grant to the one school registered at the store that raised the most funds. Mapleton Elementary was Graves’ education grant winner. An additional $1,080 was awarded to 12 other schools in the area.
“On behalf of Graves’ Shop ‘n Save, it gives me great pleasure to present this check to Mapleton Elementary School,” said Samiya. “Graves’ Shop ‘n Save is committed to improving the quality of life in the communities we serve and I can’t think of a better way to do so than by investing in our local schools.”

Eaton sets sail on training ship

Keenan Eaton  of Mapleton is a marine systems engineering major at Maine Maritime Academy in Castine. Eaton was named to the Dean’s List for the spring semester. LO-KEENAN EATON-DCX-SH-22
Currently, Eaton is on the Maine Maritime Academy training ship “State of Maine” on a cruise that will take him to San Juan, Puerto Rico, Baltimore and Quebec City before returning in July. Just last week the ship was in Tampa. The ship left Castine May 9 and will host a family day sail June 30 on the return leg from Searsport to Castine. Eaton’s parents, Mike and Torry, plan to join him for the trip. The day sail allows parents the unique opportunity to see the high level of technical proficiency and leadership achieved by the students. The training ship will return to its homeport of Castine Sunday, June 30. Training cruise activities will continue in port through Wednesday, July 3.
Friends, family, and fans of the cruise are able to follow the ship’s journey through the cruise blog at cruise.mainemaritime.edu.
Eaton just finished his third year of the five-year program. During the fourth year, students in the program have the opportunity to sit for the U.S. Coast Guard Third Assistant Engineer’s License and for the Fundamentals of Engineering examination at the completion of the first semester of the fifth year. Eaton will graduate with a bachelor of science degree with a major in engineering operations in May 2014, and will then return for the fifth year for his marine systems engineering degree.
The program in marine systems engineering license track is designed for students with a strong mathematical and analytical ability, as well as interest in practical engineering. It is the most academically rigorous course of study at Maine Maritime Academy. Only a few engineering programs in the United States offer a comparable curriculum. The synergy of the 10-course design/analysis sequence with a strong hands-on marine component is the hallmark of the MSE license track.

Honor student

Steven Carmichael, son of Mark and Sherrie Carmichael of Mapleton, has been named to the Honors List for the spring semester at the New England School of Communications in Bangor. Carmichael is a 2008 graduate of Presque Isle High School. Congratulations, Steven!
