MOUNT CHASE – Marguerite, 96, passed away at her home May 25, 2013, with her family at her side after a short illness. She was born July 16, 1916, to Curtis and Flora Bradley Hatt.
She grew up in Patten and graduated from Patten Academy and then attended and graduated from Castine Normal School. She taught two years and then went to work at Katahdin Trust Co. She loved strawberry and fiddlehead picking and had a great love for miniature dachshunds – she had three of them over the years. She was an artist of handwork. She was proficient in counted cross-stitch, knitting, quilting and crocheting. Her collection of her many works were shown at Lumberman’s Museum in 2010. She played clarinet in the Patten Academy juvenile band and played in the Castine orchestra. She was also an accomplished pianist. She started playing piano at the age of six and over the years she played as the pianist for the Civilian Conservation Corps orchestra. In 1946, she was honored to accompany Bertram Rowe, a baritone soloist from New York and she played for Order of the Eastern Star. She was past president at Patten Woman’s Club and was a past matron for Eastern Star. She was one of the oldest members of the Methodist Church and worked for many years on the United Methodist Women church fairs. She was one of the founding members of Shin Pond Babes. She was a wonderful cook and was well known for her super sweet pies.
She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Janine and Gerald Bertone of Mount Chase; former daughter-in-law, Christy Olsen Hall; daughter-in-law, Carol Olsen of Idaho; five grandchildren, Shannon Olsen Grass and husband, Frank, of Arundrel, Andrew Olsen of Mount Chase, Alan Bertone and wife, Julie, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., Gary and wife, Kathy, of Southboro, Mass., and Dean and wife, Jane, of Apple Valley, Calif.; as well as seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; one nephew; two nieces; and several cousins, one special one being Madelyn Townsend.
