Let us vote on the PAYT!
To the editor:
I would like to let the residents of Presque Isle know that in an April 2013 city council meeting, city manager Jim Bennett told the councilors that by August 2013, they needed to decide on keeping or getting rid of the Pay-As-You-Throw program.
The PAYT is not working. We need to get rid of it once and for all. However, I would like to point out that by getting rid of the PAYT program that it does not stop us from recycling or composting.
By denying that we have a problem when there is clearly a serious problem isn’t going to get us anywhere. By arguing back and forth, that isn’t getting anything resolved either.
I feel if the councilors are undecided about PAYT, then let us, the residents, tell you. Let us vote on it. Open up the polls and let us vote on the PAYT.
This PAYT was pushed onto us who didn’t have a chance to say “No, I don’t want it.”
We want our say now. The residents of Presque Isle were happy to let you last November about the community center. You, the councilors, gave them the chance to speak. Thank you for that. Now, today the residents are saying “why can’t we have a say about our trash?”
The fair thing to do is let us vote on the PAYT. By letting the residents vote on this, I feel it will speak in a great volume.
So between now and August 2013, we, the residents of Presque Isle, need to speak out about the PAYT. If you want to vote on the PAYT program let the councilors know that.
The next city council meeting is Monday, June 3 at 6 p.m. I will be there speaking about the facts on how this PAYT program has affected our beautiful city. I encourage anyone who would like to speak out about the PAYT and if you also want the councilors to know that you would like to vote on the PAYT, now is the time to do it.
Let’s put this PAYT in an orange bag and put it to rest once and for all. Let us move on and improve our trash issue. Let us vote on the PAYT.
