Softball teams couldn’t ask for better playing conditions as then they had this last week. The East Grand girls are holding a 5-1 record and hoping to make it back into the playoffs. Most teams are holding their own, but a few still need to step up their game.
On Monday in Danforth, the Lady Vikings easily handled Shead, 18-5. Sophomore Allie McEwen doubled and singled twice to knock in four runs to power East Grand. Adrianna Phillips collected three hits and drove in two runs, while Sarah Stoddard added two hits for two RBIs.
East Grand senior pitcher Elisha Farley allowed four hits, while striking out six to pick up her first varsity win.
Last Thursday in Mars Hill, the Lady Vikings eked out a 20-19 victory in nine innings of play. East Grand led 11-7 after four, but CAHS came back to hold East Grand scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings and scored six runs for a 13-11 advantage.
In the top of the seventh, East Grand scored three times, but couldn’t keep CAHS from scoring in the bottom of the frame to force extra innings. It came down to East Grand being able to make the stop when they needed to in the bottom of the ninth to pick up the one-run win.
Chelsea Winiarski collected three singles and drove in two runs and winning pitcher McEwen singled twice and knocked in two runs.
Shaunna Beaudoin, Farley, Stoddard and Philips posted two hits each.
For CAHS, Michaela King tripled and stroked three singles and Karli Levesque recorded four base hits. Paige Garrison, Kayla Cushman and Megan King had three hits each in the game.
The Lady Vikings handled visiting Hodgdon last Tuesday, 13-1, as McEwen gave up five hits, while striking out five. At the plate. Amanda Adams singled three times to bring in two runs, while Beaudoin blasted a home run. Winiarski added three hits and three RBIs.
For Hodgdon, Tianna McEwen knocked in the lone run.
The Lady Hawks suffered another 13-1 defeat to Katahdin in Stacyville last Thursday.
Ashley Randall struck out seven, while allowing two hits for Katahdin. She helped herself at the plate hitting two doubles, while Mariah Farrington singled twice.
For Hodgdon, Jamie Theriault and Lacy McQuarrie each singled.
The Lady Cougars took a 7-1 lead after two innings of play en route to the five-inning win.
Last Tuesday, the Lady Cougars rolled by host Schenck, 15-4.
Makayla Patterson had four hits and two RBIs, while Megan Merry chipped in with two hits and two RBIs to back up winning pitcher Randall, who hurled a three-hitter, striking out 14.
In Dyer Brook last Wednesday, Katahdin overpowered Southern Aroostook, 12-1.
Winning pitcher Randall gave up a home run in the seventh inning, but struck out 13, walked one, as she put together a three-hitter.
For Katahdin, Patterson hit two singles and Merry doubled. Brianna Majkowski, Morgan Livezey, Courtney Stevens, Erin Crawford and Randall all singled.
For SACS, Sable Altvater hit a homerun, while Desirae Dubois and Mataya Hartin each singled.
Last Tuesday, the Lady Warriors battled Ashland in Dyer Brook, falling 30-15.
Kennedi Smith hit a double and two singles to knock in three runs, while Jess Nye doubled and singled and also drove in three runs.
The Lady Warriors led 12-7 after two innings, but Ashland rallied for a 10-run third to put distance between themselves and Southern Aroostook.
The Houlton Lady Shires continue to struggle, falling to host Stearns, 19-7, last Friday.
The Lady Shires trailed 13-3 after the third and couldn’t recover. Emma Drew singled three times to drive in two runs, while Alaina Stewart doubled and singled to knock in two runs.
Last Tuesday at home, the Caribou Vikings overtook Houlton, 14-1, behind Kristen Plante’s 3-for-4 performance from the plate.
The day before, the Lady Shires were blanked by visiting Mattanawcook Academy, 29-0, as Lynx pitcher Courtney McIntyre struck out eight and threw a perfect game in the five-inning victory.
