Cousins, Don E., 90, April 22, 2013. Interment to be held in Caribou.
BURLINGTON, VT – Don E. Cousins, 90, formerly of Caribou, died April 22, 2013, in Burlington, VT. He was born Dec. 7, 1922 in Caribou, ME, son of the late Louis and Mildred Cousins. He was a 1940 graduate of Caribou High School and served in the Army from 1942-1945. He married the former Helen Davis of Caribou, ME In 1941.
He attended Williams College in Williamstown, Mass. where he received a degree in banking and finance and attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas, where he earned a diploma from the Graduate School of Banking. He was a certified financial analyst from Dunn and Bradstreet. In 1945, he joined the Northern National Bank of Presque Isle, ME and later went on to became president of The Central National Bank of Sterling, IL until retirement. He served as president of Kiwanis Club, president of the Chamber of Commerce, on the board of directors of the YMCA, president of Whiteside County Bankers Assoc. and trustee of the First Congregational Church of Sterling, IL. He was also a member of Caribou and Presque Isle, Maine’s concert bands, Presque Isle Chamber of Commerce, treasurer of the American Legion, Past Exalted Ruler of the Elks and a past president of the Northern Maine Investment Club.
He loved all things aviation and became a FAA Licensed Pilot and aircraft owner. Music was a large part of Don’s life starting in high school when he was the State Winner of Maine’s Individual Instrumentalist State Competition. He loved all kinds of music and loved to entertain guests with his keyboard renditions of his favorite jazz. He and Helen enjoyed many years of their retirement RVing and finally settled in Charlotte Harbor, Florida for 27 years.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Helen; son, Jeff (Sue) Cousins of Surprise, AZ, daughter, Dianne Breed (Larry) of Wilmington, NC, and son Barry (Ann) of Burlington, VT; two brothers; four granddaughters, Jamie Hirota, Honolulu, HI, Laurie Strausberger, Bollingbrook, Il., Jodi Phillips of York County, Va. and Kelly Morris of York County, VA; four great-granddaughters, two great-grandsons and two great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a beloved grandson, Drew Cousins.
A memorial service was held in Burlington, VT. He will be buried in Caribou.
