Johnson top decathlete
Senior Jason Johnson of Mapleton led the efforts of three University of Southern Maine competitors at the annual Holy Cross Decathlon held April 17 and 18 by finishing 13th overall.
Competing in his first decathlon of the 2013 season, Jason Johnson, a member of the Huskies’ track and field team, scored a career-best 5,376 points for the 10 events. On Thursday, he posted the best mark in the discus with a throw of 38.54 meters (126 feet, 5 inches) to earn 635 points, and was seventh in the javelin with a throw of 46.51 meters (152 feet, 7 inches) for 564 points.
Johnson also placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 40.37 meters (132-5) at the State of Maine Championships, held at Bates College in Lewiston Saturday.
The Huskies will compete this Saturday at the Little East Conference and New England Alliance Championships being held at Bridgewater State University.
